So I bought a big ass landing net and was curious what length handles everyone uses? Easy to shorten the handle, but too short would be bad and full length is too long.

I for big fish, I prefer landing nets with a handle which is just long enough so I can hold the end of the handle in my armpit while bringing the fish to the net with my rod.  This is partly because I don't like having a big net sticking several feet above my head when it's sitting in a rod holder, and partly because I find a net with a short handle easier to use from a kayak.  An example is the Ego net shown below.  This net comes with a handle which extends from 28" out to 60", but I replaced that handle with the 13" handle shown below.  The second picture below shows how the net looks when stowed in a rear rod holder in my kayak.  This net has a deep rubber net which is great for retaining big fish.  If you have a shallow net, a fish can get its tail on the rim of the net and flip itself out of the net.

I have been using 36" long handle and happy with its performance.

If you are going to salmon fish in the ocean, keep it a big ass net.longer the handle the better.  For other ocean fish I just gaff em.I have a little net just to be legal.
