I've had most of my reels about a year now and probably need to get them cleaned. I want to start learning to clean them myself, but am I little intimidated with all the small pieces and reassembly. Anyone have any advice or references to videos or articles on this topic?

Depending on which model you’re working on, you might find a tutorial from Alan Tani (Google it).

Or... If the reels are Shimanos, you can send them back to Shimano for service ($30 or so plus shipping). I assume other brands do the same.

Take pictures, get a set of small screwdrivers. Do it in a well lit room, that is clean. Nothing worse then having to look for a 1/8" spring in a messy place. They are basically all the same as how they work. Modern reels have more things that go wrong, mainly berrings.
We have the government, that our forefathers warned us about.

Lay down a small white towel/rug on your work space and line the parts up as you take them off one by one. This way, you’d know which part comes after what when it’s time to put them back together. Some reels come with very tiny, unnoticeable springs so be extra careful. Alantani.com for reference and look up your reel

Alan Tani, and if he doesn’t have a tutorial up there you might want to consider google.
I use the lid to a shoe box to keep the small parts contained. Good luck!
