I have a new teenage driver, and have a habit of misplacing things.
I searched google and it looks like the car tracking devices were relatively expensive (90-$100) and require a monthly subscription fee ($19-25/mo).  I was curious if that situation has improved and if there is a reliable GPS tracker that doesn't require a monthly subscription fee?
I also see there are bluetooth devices, with an effective range of 100 feet, or dependence on the user community (Tile App).
I wondered if anyone has advice on a great car tracker or mini asset tracker that doesn't require monthly subscription?

Life360 is popular for parents tracking their kids location. I use the free version and think its great so do a bunch of parents I know. Its installed on cell phones.

You might be able to find one that operates off of prepaid phone cards. These ones often require you to text them and then an automated text returns with the long - lat.  I used to use these to find my RC planes when i would fly out of sight/range years ago

On the teenage driver, When my son got his car/license, I bought him a nice cell and paid for the monthly service, He was happy. I said, just so you understand, that phone is a present to me. He looked bewildered. I explained that if he ever failed to answer when I called he would lose the phone and the right to drive. I was pretty lenient with my kids, but when I wasn't they knew I meant it.  That plan worked well.  Of course what I don't know, I don't know, and still don't want to know til this day, since my kids are brutally honest these days they'll start to tell me stuff (that I don't want to know :smt002).

Pretty easy to set up GPS tracking between phones these days.

As far as misplacing things, I'm screwed.

Those are some really great advice. I will have to steal them when it's time to get my kids one.

Do you want info like speed or just location?  Find a phone will tell you where their iPhone is.

Sorry this one requires a subscription but I though I'd share anyway.

I've been using Vyncs for a long time now, it connects to your OBD port, uses cellular.

The first year of subscription is included and the $80/yr subscription is cheaper than a speeding ticket.

It's interesting when you can call out your teenage kids that they were speeding.  :smt044

It has a lot of great features and notifications. I'm not sure if there are any newer tracking devices out there but it serves my purpose.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone. I just knew the answer was in this community somewhere.
Herewith some responses:
-Life 360 is a great app if your teenager doesn't decide that "the phone ran out of battery" when convenient.
-The device that uses a prepaid phone card sounds promising. I thought they only charge if you call to locate the device, but as far as I can tell, you still need to pay a 6-$9 monthly fee.. which I was trying to avoid. Can you give any extra details?  And yes, I also have sent RC planes over the horizon and had difficulty getting them back.
- The plug in devices that monitor speed acceleration etc.. about $90 and are so easy to unplug...yes, I know it would be nice to have a compliant teenager...I'll see if I can negotiate this, but it would be so much more effective it were covert.
- Sailmaster... a 25 meter device (bluetooth) has pretty limited usefulness in my opinion. The Tile App, which uses Blue tooth, but relies on everyone else who has the app open to be effective doesn't sound very promising to me.  Wonder if folks have had different experience? Might work for the car keys I drop behind the couch, but beyond that I can't think of much use for 'em.

I didn't want to say it outright, but these GPS devices are how car dealers keep their cars on the lot.  Anyone ever have a kayak dissapear?  I would think there would be more interest in these for Asset protection in this community....
Thanks for the advice so far, still interested in other solutions....

Not sure how you plan to ensure your teenager, but if you consider metromile insurance, then one of the plusses is the fact they have a device to plug into your obd2 only port of your vehicle. This way they keep track of mileage and you also benefit from the fact that you know the whereabouts of the car at any given time. Good for theft/driver tracking :). OBD2 only, so 1996 or newer cars.

They keep track of way more than just your mileage.
