“...Got back to the ramp (edit: in Alameda) and it was a cluster f***. Kayakers just think they can sneak right in front of the line and load/unload their kayaks in the middle of the ramp. No common sense. Tried to talked to them politely but they think they own the ramp. I guessed that’s what happened when most of the ramps are closed so we will be seeing people with no common sense at the ramp.”

Thought I would pass it along. Sure, this guy is coming at this w a certain attitude, and from his side only, but let’s do our part to share good will and proper etiquette on (and off) the water. We are all fishermen and fisherwomen on sea faring vessels and should abide by similar rules. Especially in this sensitive SIP environment, last thing we need is to be singled out as a group w “no common sense”.  I have fought the mountain bike trail access issues for too long and the animosity between user groups there is terrible. Don’t want to see it like that on the water, ever!

I responded to the comment w some positive support for kayakers so hopefully it’s received well!

can you link the Coastside topic?   its a bummer that he felt overstepped.  Hopefully both parties were able to take something away from it and be a little more self aware

Well, without knowing the entire deal I can probably see his point. Too many kayak fisherman back down the ramp, rig their kayaks, leave kayak on ramp, park car, go out fishing, come back in, leave kayak on ramp, go get car, totally unload kayak contents back into car, load kayak, then drive off. All of this on a crowded ramp. When the ramp is crowded, or may become crowded at a possibly busy location, it is best to use a set of wheels. There is a parking ramp or staging area for a reason. Rig kayak in parking lot, wheel to ramp, put kayak to the side where boats can launch still, put wheels away and the go fish. Same thing when returning. I have seen far too many kayakers take forever at a ramp with their car, even when it is only kayakers around. Courtesy goes a long way.

Exactly. I see idiot kayakers doing this all the time at Miller in Tomales.....which is pretty friggin' lame considering you don't even need to launch from the ramp there.

I'm surprised you didn't recognize him as a longtime NCKAer too.  Nothing he said is untrue.  Look at the yahoos that are at any of the hotspots these days.  Lack of safety, lack of courtesy, and lack of sense.  Add in YouTube, and this is what you have with the world's fastest growing sport.

Word. He wasn't attacking ncka members at all. Just more kayakers getting into the sport and not knowing what they're doing.

Used to be, if you saw someone rigged up on the water... they were part of or had knowledge of NCKA. Lately, seeing lots of people that have no idea NCKA exists and have none of the info that might keep them safe or help them to interact properly. Spread the word, might save a life. NCKA is more than just a chat group....
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Totally agree a lot of people into the sport and think its okay to hold off boaters or don’t have common sense! A lot of people want to be the next YouTube star for kayakers these days! Nothing against them but I have seen a few occasion where they occupy the ramp to set up their cameras and what not.

After reading that post it does seem he was attacking all kayakers but I know it wasn’t his intention and knew he was a member on here.

Can’t we just get along and be civil and just catch fish :-)

How about opening up boat ramps that are closed so we don’t have more people crowding into less space? Seems to me that would go a long ways towards eliminating problems like this, as well as being much safer.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

I did not realize that he was a long time NCKA member and I took his comment as a generalization against all kayakers. Apparently that was a misunderstanding.

My post was to make sure that we all do our part to get along out there. And if we see kayakers acting like idiots, maybe let them know, politely. That goes for me too. If you see me doing something stupid out there, please let me know!!

Happy Mother’s Day all!
