September of 2019, I was fishing San Simeon for rockfish. 70ft of water just jigging away. I had 2-3 rockfish that I had already caught that I keep on a game clip in the water behind me. I see a little 2-3" white thing moving towards the kayak at a pretty decent speed. Thinking huh, wonder what that is. Then it dawns on me, and I see the small bus that is about to swim under me and the 2-3" white thing is a scar that was on the back of the shark. Absolutely massive great white shark. I'd say 16ft at least. Scared the shit out of me. I start screaming for my buddies and paddling hard. The shark circled back once more directly swam under me and that was the last we saw of it. We kept fishing and all ended with a limit of Reds. Crazy experience as I have only been kayak fishing the ocean now for 3-4 years. Didn't think I'd see one this early in the game. One thing you wont believe when you see one is how freaking wide they are. Literally as wide as a small truck. A small truck with really sharp teeth and a reputation for being like the most bad ass predator to ever live.

Here's one of my tales from 2009, with sketches

<snipped> Not sure of the species but it cut right through my line when I got it close to the surface

I don’t know if you guys get threshers down there, plus it may be a bit early if you do. Thoughts?

I have seen people catch them here before and saw one fully breach once up at HMB. But this was not a thresher shark, some kind of bigger bottom shark

Isn't there a rule on this board that all reports of close encounters with sharks are required to report if a Shark Shield was in use at the time?

I have a few. But I will tell significant ones. Shelter Cove. 12-14ft under my kayak just suspended staring at my kayak. No more than 10 feet away on my left side.

Last year Rockaway 7-9 ft breach next to me.

Bean Hollow probably the scariest encounter, I picked up shark shield the next day. Encountered it 3x in 1 day. Probably the biggest too base on the dorsal fin 2.5-3.5 ft.
Live today for tomorrow's sake.
