Well, sad news: the new and nicely done City of Alameda Encinal Boat Ramp is closed effective this afternoon, as per the City’s official website.

I stopped by after my nearby Food Bank volunteer shift in order to check up my local spot, and was just in time to see 2 city workers bolting up a brand new “No Trespassing” sign on the gates.  They offered no info, so I checked the website and learned the news. On my way back to the ramp, the entire parking lot was filled and there were cars parked well along the driveway, with many PB’s out on the water, a decent crop of yakkers, and a good number of wall fishermen.

While I was there, most people seemed to be observing the social distancing guidelines, but the PB’s are going to be questionable, as is the wall.  This is quite a bummer, as Hali season seems to be improving.

That sucks. One there's so many people hanging in the lot, chugging beers.  Idiot state.

Noooo!

I've been worrying that is coming for a while. It did seem like the vast majority of folks were observing good practices. Kayakers, of course, have no problem staying away from each other.   I followed the Arrive, Unload, Fish, Pack, Leave plan. I didn't use facilities or stop on the way to or from.

Unfortunately,  the optics of the parking lot were bad even if few people were actually there at any given time. It did seem like, because so many other recreational areas are closed, there were additional people going there to walk their dogs or let their kids rollerblade, funneled into fewer and fewer places. So it looked worse than it was, but probably no more of a problem than the safeway parking lot down the street.

I spoke to the workers, from a distance, when I was there, thanking them for being there. As of Monday they said they had no plans to close. But I figured they were one concerned citizen away...

I have a business that literally went from best year ever to evaporating, and the future is a black hole. Fishing is a necessary refuge to clear my head. Personally, this is pretty crushing.

Yes we all fish to clear our minds. The problem is 40 million people are in this state. and they have to do something. Its not like Montana where I go out my back door and fish the stream with no one at all around even in good times. I do feel your pain. I too have had new ventures I wanted to start this year. I have trademarks approved but no one has answered for 3 weeks from my lawyer to the patent offices. Both emails and phone. The only response 3 weeks ago. send more money? LOL

Interesting.  I figured the closure was coming with the new gate getting installed last week.

The gate was not locked this morning and people were launching boats as well as fishing from the rock wall.

Someone posted this picture on facebook. I wonder if they will be wearing a mask, if not, it'll be shut down again.

I'm not seeing the closure notice on their website any more. I wonder if they realize it's silly to close the ramp but still allow jetting fishing.

Everybody be cool. Wear a mask. Don't make it a party. Keep a low profile. Go fishing!
