Hey Guys, thinking about buying my dad a retirement gift. Any suggestions on a SF Bay salt combo? Plan on taking him out on charters more often now, targeting the usual stripper, halibut and rock fish. Maybe something that works decent for Salmon too if it exist. Mid range, not breaking the bank but also something that will hold up.

Thanks and sorry for the non kayak related topic. I have yet to take my kayak out in the bay but with Halibut season kicking in, i'm down for a meet up! HMU!  :smt004

Thanks!

If you're set on staying inside of SF Bay, there are a number of great charters that offer live bait striper/halibut trips  during the summer. Just depends if you want to go out on a larger boat or a smaller 6 pack trip.

I use a Tekota 500 line counter paired with a Trevala MH for just about everything bay and ocean. It would be a little light for deep rock fish trips though. About $300 +- depending on available sales.

Ha ha. I read "combo" in your question as if you were looking for combo trip/charter suggestions, not the rod/reel itself. Long day at work and my mind was apparently mush.

Cant go wrong with the Trevala mentioned above as far as rods go.

I've Taken my 7' Trevala ML on ~200' deep rockfishing charters, and it was great.  dropping anywhere from 12-18oz leadheads and I was happy with it's performance, I bet the MH is perfect.

Penn Warfare LW in pretty much any size will be a decent cheap reel. even in the smallest one can hold over 400 yards of 30# at 15lbs of drag it's not tipping the scales but should be as good or better than the penn reels on  the boat.

if you got a couple more bucks, the Daiwa Lexa 300 is a pretty awesome reel.

It’s been a long time since I have been on a rock fish charter. The last time I went we were dropping right around 300’, and I think we could have 5-7 shrimp flys on the line. With the weight needed to get down plus bringing up a bunch fish we were using very heavy rods, and reels. My Tekota, and Trevala have been great for rock fishing from the kayak.

Thanks all!

Might go with the Trevala and checking out the Tekota. Would be nice with line counter.

Cheers!

Thanks, I'm going to look into the PENN.

I was thinking of gifting the Daiwa Lexa to my self  :smt002

I'd recommend a Daiwa VIP 270.  Great all-around rod for the bay and could also handle charter boat salmon and rockfish.

Would pair nicely with a penn squall/fathom or daiwa sealine

If you were looking at the Penn Warfare 30LW ( the big boy ) I've got one that I could part with, it's got 50# moss green power pro braid, the capacity on the thing is HUGE.
