Cape Mendocino - 7/16

What a beautiful day out at the Cape yesterday!  I felt very lonely though without my camera!  Forgot it at home.  Fished 6-8:30PM for 12 blacks, 2 reds, a greenling, a China, and a 34" ling.  Kept 3 blacks and a red.  Fileted fish and had a cold brew at dusk in the tidepools.  I was almost relieved not to catch fatty ling or cab because I didn't have my catch and release tool with me (camera  ).  All fish came on the 6.5 oz. Megabait in dorado colors with a single barbless hook.  Fished a big 12 oz. leadhead with a giant Kalin's grub for 20 minutes until I lost it to the reef - never tried one of those before.  Bye bye $7!  It definitely looked like food for a 'Zilla, but it wasn't that fun jigging that much weight.  Could've C&R'd blacks in the kelp the entire time - had to run from them.  Last note:  felt kind of foolish out there by myself fishing for meat that I don't need and thrills that I get plenty of, but I loved it too!

A 34" ling sounds like a fatty to me!     Nice work...

abking, take a look at that big grub close to you next time, you don't need to jig them as much as
they "swim", just raise and lower and swim it around a bit.  or reel up a bit and lower. no need to
really jig it like the iron I think. you can even deadstick them just above the bottom.
