Looks like Andy had the morning shift & I was lucky enough to make it out after work. Same scenario, killer day.  Sheet glass, whales rolling around, CAUGHT OVER 30 FISH TOTAL.  Basically got a fish 3 out of 4 drops for over 2 hours worth of fishing.

I knew the wind was finally down & the surf is close to flat too.  Driving over I kept saying if I don't score today I'm giving up!

Headed out of Harvey, tried a drop not far out just to test it out & blammo, had a yellow or blue every time.  It was so calm I figured it'd be great offshore, sure enough it was good.  Kept getting blues so I figured why not, I'm going to at least limit out on them.  Had big ones little ones etc. mixed in with a few yellows.  Kept 9 of 'em & figured I'd leave one slot left in case I hit a good Ling or Verm.

Started to head in & figured I'd try closer to shore & sure enough first drop 24.5" Ling.  No Verms for me though, I must be Verm-cursed because I've only had 2 all season.

Insane day if you can get out there you should.

go team scupper pro! so I guess all this time the fish were there and just not eating?

they were waiting for good weather? being all grumpy and recalcitrant?  :smt017

well, maybe it'll be good for awhile?

Im not sure, but I think you get 2 lings PLUS 10 rockfish. check the regs tho. certainly
safer to just come in with 10 fish.

Personally, I think it's a water clarity issue.  When everything lays down, the fishing is almost always good, I'm almost always hitting the same spots with the same rig, it's just better when it's calm.

On another note, I called DFG about the MPA's & the gal said "more than likely no sooner than October"!!!!  Sounds good to me!

It was a stellar day!! Did you see/hear/smell any whales while you were out?  What were you using?  Did you tip w/ squid?

yep whales were rolling all around & you could hear for miles like you said. it didn't occur to me that the stank was from there breath but it was stanky at times!

no i didn't tip w/ squid (and it was still going off), i used a white scampi for the Ling and i was using my blue & white swimbaits and dorado colored swimbaits for the rest.  it seemed as though the blues went more nuts for the swimbaits.

i will try squid next time, i've heard that from a lot of people, i'm sure it would kick it up a bit.

It is 2 lings (24" or over) and 10 Rockcods.  Cabbies are one and 15" or over.  Greenling is two and 12" or over.  Cabbies and Greenlings are part of your Rockcod limit.  Can not keep Yelloweye, Canary or Cowcod.  A few more reg. on other rockcods are out there.  Just, bring a DFG booklet in a plastic bag and look at it when you catch something you are not sure about.  Only 2 hooks per rod and only one rod in the water at a time.

at least in santa cruz, you can keep 2 rods out until you have a rockfish in the boat.

safer to just use one rod all around, but everybody fishing for halibut has two rods out
until they decide to keep that first rockfish.
