I want to start this report out by saying thanks to everyone for their help and info - it really helped!

We decided not to try and kayak out of Sunset Beach as I am a girl and there are big waves there. So instead, my buddy Todd and I dropped our wives off at the MB Aquarium on Tuesday morning and launched from the coast guard station near the jetty just south of Cannery Row.  We paddled out to the red buoy and then drifted the outside edge of the kelp with jigs.  He was using fishtraps on 2oz. heads and I was using diamonds and Megabait jigs.  We both had shrimp flies above our jigs.  We fished from about 11:00 to 2:00.  The total was as follows:

2 - olive rockfish
2 - brown rockfish
2 - sanddabs (one on a 6/0 shrimp fly and one on a diamond.  Who figures?
1 - boccaio (little and thrown back)
1 - treefish
1 - blue rockfish

After we finished fishing, we picked up the women (two wives and two three-year-old girls) went into Hopkins and did the tourist thing with the sea otters and seals.  Da' wives were very happy and the girls had a blast.  Plus fish taco's at the campsite.

Thanks again!

dont feel bad, I grew up in Watsonville and sunset beach has been a favorite of mine for years.  I have NEVER seen a kayak launch from there!

congrats on an excellent choice to head towards cannery row

Nice report, glad to hear you made it out.

Sand Dabs make good ling bait.  Just stick the hook through the head and send 'em back down (if using shrimp fly or diamond jig).
