Definitely get one hopefully one that can instantly transmit your GPS location to the coast guard or a buddy?

I’ve had very good performance and reliability from the two Icom handhelds that I’ve owned. The batteries are still holding a full day charge going on 6 years now. A little more expensive than the competition but they are robust and will last you for many seasons.

As a new kayaker, trying to decide if I need to invest in a VHF radio in case of an emergency or for communication while out on the water.

Curious on your thoughts on it, and any recommendations as to which features are important;  battery life, # of watts, GPS etc...

Thanks for your time.

Get one! I usually carry three on my kayak (typically do 2-3 day long expeditions) just in case one fails. Life is precious, give yourself a fighting chance in case anything happens! I realized this first hand the last few weeks...
