Second unit DEAD after one day on the water.
Hate to be negative about a company that has been so kind to me so I'm going to ask ....
Has anyone else has issues with the original Lowrance Hook-5 going dead?
The first unit lasted just over a year, then just shut off mid day.
Called customer service and was told it was out of warranty and would cost flat fee of $130. Another member here was kind enough to gift me another (same model) unit. After installing new unit with new power cord and transducer the unit worked great for exactly one day. The next day out, the unit died after 1/2 hour and is toast.called customer service again and was given same as above.
Don't see what I could have done wrong, all wires soldered and heat shrink, new batteries etc.
Is this a known problem with this unit? I know the company has a long history and good reputation,  but I find myself now having doubts about my brand selection.
Thoughts, advice and suggestions much appreciated
Thanks

My new Elite 5Ti gave me troubles the 2nd time I took it out — turns out it was a dead battery.

I’m curious about this (in general) too. I’ve often thought about upgrading my 8 year old Garmin FF but it seems like there’s a steady stream of problems with Lowrance FF posted here. My Garmin has been entirely problem free. I get the impression the Lowrance might not be up to the rigors of kayak fishing...

All connections are soldered and covered with shrink tube so it is not a connection issue, also, I have 4 new and newish batteries fully charged.
I have tried both power cords and all 4 batteries ......
Both units are dead.

I wish you are closer to me.
I would be willing to take it apart to find out if water leaking is the issue.

I had a hook 5 brick on me for no reason one day after maybe a year. Replaced it with another that worked fine until I sold the kayak.

I had a hook-5 hdi and it would turn on and eventually just shut off. I've gone through many lowrance FF. I like them because of their maps, and price point but their durability has become an issue over the years. So far i've sealed of the SD card slot on my units and its been working for 2+ years. Maybe that is the culprit all theses years.

How do you update SW if micro-SD slot is sealed? I was thinking about it, but was glad I did not do it. Recently GPS-synced time on my Elite5 was off and required SW update.

FWIW my Elite 5 is running well after 4+ years (except some power connector issues, luckily so far those were on cord side). But of course I don't fish as much as some here :)

I would think with the incredible growth our sport has experienced these past few years; the time would be right for one of these manufacturers to produce a "rugidized"  unit specifically for kayaks, similar to the Panasonic laptops that are designed for rough conditions.
