La Jolla 8/14-8/15 Report

Day 1 of fishing in the books.

Great weather, friendly people, bait was easy to get which is fortunate because the sea lions are a pain! The big fish didn’t cooperate, but I got a couple bonito while trolling and then I got some smaller calico bass throwing swimbaits in the kelp on my way in. Both are new kayak species for me and I’m excited about that.

From what I’ve heard the yellowtails are scarce right now, but I have a few more days down here so I’ll keep trying!

Thanks for the report and nice catch! Is this just a bad year for them in La Jolla or are they, Yellowtail, just late? I was planning on going down this year , but the drive is holding me back.

Rk It sounds like the water has been weird down there (cold), but there have been a few yellowtail caught local, but not too many. Apparently a few salmon have been caught there recently of all things!

I was hoping that I would have pictures of more fish that we don’t have locally, but I’m pretty happy with what I caught!
