Just a quick report on the Bean, for those who might fish tomorrow:

Eric (eyeatbay) and I fished this morning with very good conditions, small swell, light winds, water looked very good. Fished 6:30 to 11:00. Mixed fog and sun today, may not have really cleared up in the afternoon. I always respect the launch and landing, but it was very easy today.

We got a slow pick of small rockfish, blues and Chinas and such, but no action for the bigger species. Eric scored one Cabezon, but otherwise I would describe the fishing as slow for the Bean, fun nonetheless.

Have fun!

Tall Paul

Gee... what the heck's going on with the quality fishing we're use to?  Has the fishing pressure had that much adverse effect?

the whole North coast always takes a while to get going each summer.  Fihing gets better as the watter warms.  This year the water is cooler that the past few years so I think it's taking longer.  End of July into August i think that place will be going off like we saw last year.

thanks for the report, helps me make up my mind for this weekend as well.  I'm leaning towards staying in town, scruz or capitola for flatties.

not sure if this might be a contributing factor. i've been checking out PBs reports from Stagnaro and Queen's of hearts. they've been fishing these areas as well and have been getting "a mess of fish" and "limiting out" everyday... :smt011

Yeah, it always sounds like that.  they are gettting limits, but it often takes all day and the fish are small.  Making multiple stops and covering lots of territory, unlike us yakking it.

Because I track it pretty closely, I know that Stagnaro's has not gone north of Ano all year.  They had only a few days at Ano proper, one really good day and the next day skunk, they got their fish off Scott's Creek that day, ran into a passle of gophers on the inside. the water up there was cloudy and dark for the 1st month of the season.  They have hit Davenport occasionally, but have done most of their fishing (and catching) off Wilder's and the West Side of Santa Cruz.

Not sure where Queen of Hearts has been going, but their partner, Dennis Baxter on the New Capt Pete has forayed down to Pigeon Point only a couple times this season.

Those guys on the big boats work hard and the fishing has to be reeeeelly bad for them not to get limits or near limits.  fishing is not BAD on the North Coast right now, just not really GOOD yet.

But, it will be.  and we will be on it.

It was good only for the first 1/2hour. I fished around the areas where we had pulled quality of fish last year. But no luck today. The condition was calm, warm, and no wind to speak of. We left early too. Good fishing with you, Paul.

Allen - thanks for the info on PBs. I would agree with your pro assessment.

Ya know I hit the Sonoma coast on Thursday for perfect conditions. Couldn't ask for a nicer day, but the fishing was tough. Had to work for them. I don't know if it's the super clear water, the moon phase, or what??  :smt017 I'm sure it'll only get better as the season goes on though. Last year I went out the week after the lingcod season closed and I couldn't keep em off... This year, I'm hitting it right before it closes for sure.
