Hopefully the rumor is true.

Secondarily, if so, seems a little unusual that neither the one that fell in nor the one that rescued the kayaker have come forward.

Word on the street is the owner fell out then couldn’t get back in, so he got a ride back to shore from another kayaker, then went home to warm up/recover. And still hasn’t reported it...? Just a rumor I heard though

I was kinda thinking the same thing...now maybe just too embarrassed to come forward due to the response he caused...pretty inconsiderate if that is the case.

I hope for that scenario.
really weird to just ditch the yak and leave it to drift along though. Most of us here would know that doing so would result in a search eventually unless it was made clear to the CG from the start.

So.  In addition to learning self-rescue, seems learning assisted rescue could have come in handy here.  NOT notifying authorities is a big mistake.   When my kayaks were washed off the SC Wharf last November, the first thing I did was notify Sherriff's, State Parks,  Harbor Patrol, Boat US tow service. Monte at Boat US called the CG for me.  All to make sure everyone knew these empty floating boats weren't missing a person, just adrift. (also to hopefully get help in recovering them.)

MBK is sponsoring a FREE self-rescue class next weekend.  Worth it at twice the price!!!   thank you Adam Helm and Cass Schrock

Actually MBK holds this class any Saturday cost is $75.00 but Aug 3 it's FREE!  If you've never climbed into your kayak OTW, this is a must.

Agree. Coast Guard website says you should notify them if you manage to get back to shore without your kayak so that they can stop the search.  They also want kayakers to put contact info in the kayak so that they know whose kayak it belongs to.

Hope the rumors are true and the guy is okay.

Either a very bad ending, or the person does not want to come forward.

If it was a bad ending, I would believe that an abandoned vehicle would have been located by know (it's been over a week).

If the rumor of the kayaker getting picked up and brought back to shore sans yak is true, then the individual is either afraid of repurcusions for not reporting the abandoned kayak or just doesn't want to be found for whatever reason.  idk.  but i would want my kayak and my gear back if it was me.

Never thought of that - That is a great idea.
A good reminder to write your name, phone numbers, and email on your boat.

I write it all in in big clear printing in Sharpie on the hull inside the front hatch, so if you pop off the hatch cover, all the info is staring at you.

Yup, a very good idea.
