I came across a couple of back eddies yesterday well north of Hog where the chovies were just boiling on the surface. Pretty sure a dip type net would have bagged a day supply in one pass. I do think they have to be really thick at the surface for a dip net to work though. Better off with a sabiki most of the time. The current on incoming can really rip next to the west bank near Tom's Point area so be prepared for plenty of pedal and paddle to fish that local.

If you're wanting to paddle up north towards Tom's Point (or further), as Charles said, the incoming current can be pretty stiff against the cliffs on the west side. If you stay shallow and make your way north through the eelgrass beds east of the channel (2-5 fow), you can avoid alot of the current and save some energy.

As for the sabiki, just cut it right in the middle and make two out of it by adding more swivels. Six flailing hooks on a kayak can be really difficult to manage.

Good luck !

Fishing update: It was a beautiful day on the Tomales Bay yesterday. The morning was calm and the fog stayed outside of the bay. There were quite a few boats launching out of Miller, but it looked like most were heading out for salmon. I launched at 7:15 (a little later than I hoped) and was able to ride the outgoing tide a bit. I started my day a little north of hog island and paddled around with a swimbait on the line during slack tide (not much luck with the Sabiki). As the tide started to pick up and carry me towards hog island, I hooked a nice halibut ! 9am. After a little back and forth with him, I got him in the boat (28", 10lbs). I was pretty excited to land my first halibut. After that, things went pretty quite. I did get one other hit on my swimbait, but I had happy hands and tried setting the hook way too quick. I made a couple of passes by hog island and the yellow can, but it quiet. Overall thoughts: beautiful day on the water, but action was slower than expected.

A few other kayakers out there and a thanks to Mark for some pointers.
