Also got mine at Thomas Distributing but I believe Great White Kayak Company carries them too.

Hello High Tide,

I used the instuctions here on the site to make my battery box. If you need an inline water tight fuse holder you can get one at Hook1 for $2.50:

The actual watertight LokLok containers can be bought at Walmart -I found them by accident.

I also got my 10 AA battery holder at Thomas Electrical online. I totally felt like McGuiver when I got it put together and it worked!  :smt041

Good luck with yours!

Kim
Love it!

I have been using 8 AA batteries with no problems. I can go for two full days without recharging. It makes me wonder what difference 10 AA will make.

That's correct. You do need 10 batteries to get 12 volts. For some reason, 8 batteries (1.2 x 8 = 9.6 volts) works fine on a Eagle Cuda 250 gps / depth finder. I would assume that 10 batteries would last longer, but I wonder if the performance would be any different.

Over on the KFS.com forum (if memory serves) an individual with an electrical background chimed in one time, talking about 8 vs 10 AA rechargeable batteries. He stated that most fishfinders actually are regulating the input voltage down to about 8V. So providing the fishfinder with anything more than 8V was not really necessary, thus no need to go with more than 8 cells. A lot of other folks over there followed along with that advice, and had favorable results. YMMV

Scott

So I'll share some insights on AA batteries (somewhat applicable to batteries in general).  I've designed some cameras that operate off of AA batteries.  First off, these systems were designed to operate at 12V because that's a readily available power supply on boats.    Batteries of this type hold a charge down to about 2/3 fairly well, at least that's the range you get most of time before they fall off quickly and die.  2.3 is 8V.  So the voltage regulators are tuned to operate in the 12V range down to about 8V.  After that your battery system will go downhill quickly.  And the voltage regulator might not be designed to regulate lower than about 8V.  So if you provide a 9.6V supply, while your supply might last fairly long down to 2/3 that, or 6.4V, the voltage regulators might crap out around 8V.  Bottom line, provide 12V for longest running time.

You can find time plots of how long specific batteries last for a given current draw to try to calculate your run time.  Look at your specs for your FF to find out how much current they draw and use the plots to calculate your run time.  If I have some time, I'll look up some specs and provide an example.
