To balance or not to balance
To swing to the fences or reel like a mad dog
What’s your method to catch them sturgeon?
I recently purchased a very nice balance for around fifty bucks
But I haven’t had a chance to use it every time I plan on heading out something comes up I was going to pick up another one but have not had the time so before I did I figured I would ask the sturgeon gods out there what works for them
glade you made it
now let's get our fish on

Did you ring?... :smt005 :smt006...it's all hype...just as lucky as the next guy :smt002...FWIW If I see a bite in my ram tube holder, boink.. boink.. boink.., or I'm holding the rod, no balancer, I point the rod down and crank bout 4 times then lift and if I'm stuck I'll set twice...take into account this all happens quite quickly...then... :smt044 :smt005 :smt007

Gotta ask Eddie for a real solid answer, but i'll give my two cents here anyways.

1) I don't use a balancer (moo does tho). I use a rod holder. If it gets too rocky, i'll just hold the rod in my hand to feel the bite.
2) I've been swinging for the fences, but my last one came off. Eddie told me to try and reel in before I set the hook. I'm gonna give it shot and see if it changes anything.
3) Fish near their migration paths. Shell banks are good bet. They seem to be a lot more active during the outgoing tide, and toward the end of the tide.

I didn't have much bait last time, so i had to use some older bait in the freezer. It simply didn't work like fresh ghost or mud shrimp that I had last time.
Fresh bait makes a big difference for getting bites apparently. They just won't eat anything. GESH!?? Can this fish get anymore picky!??

Hopes this helps.--TLA

There is a new fisherman's life video where the guide rubbed procure all over his hands before loading up the bait to make sure no other scents were transferred to the ghost shrimp.  Do you guys do this as well?

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan
