Honestly, I just dumped her on the kayak and went off. It’s all about your relationship with the dog. I knew she’d be cool with it so I didn’t take any special care.

I know this sounds like a long and tedious process. This is like, worst case scenario with a dog that needs lots of time. Like I said, all I did was throw my dog on the kayak and take off paddling, so if your dog goes through the steps quickly then all this can take you a single morning or single hour. But for some dogs you’ll need a month, and that’s OK. Be patient, they’re doing their best but they may not quite understand what you’re asking of them.

Thanks for taking the time to detail all this, it sounds like a great plan and I'll definitely use it. It actually doesn't sound like a long/tedious procedure at all. I've been having such a good time training this little bastard that it should be fun.

Luckily this guy arrived as an 8 week old puppy and so far has been afraid of virtually nothing, so I remain cautiously optimistic.

As I said, pretty fearless. This is his first encounter with a skateboard. And my main fishing buddy trying to teach him to skate.

Yep that’s a good dog. Just keep things positive and they will respond to it.

update: still haven't hit the water (sheepishly, I've not gone out in months. I suck), but the 'getting comfortable with the boat' stage has gone nicely.

I'm not terribly worried about him not liking the boat:

my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

How did you go about teaching your dogs to want to be on the kayak?
I believe it was Great Bass 2 who posted years ago that he would have the retriever on share while he paddled. The dog would bark furiously not to be left behind. He eventually got onto the kayak. Jumped in the water a time or two before deciding it would be better to stay dry.
