Hi Everyone,

I picked up a Necky Dolphin about 2 years ago now and it has opened my eyes to the fishing possibilities in our coastal waters. Kayaking is a radical experience and I love to do it! One of my favorite fishing techniques is trolling a double deep six for salmon. I'm sure anyone that has done that out of a yak knows about the extreme drag/constant battle to stay straight you experience.

I've seen a few pictures of Necky Dolphins equipped with a rudder system.

Does anyone have experience with installation on these models and know of a good aftermarket rudder/assembly to purchase?

Much appreciated,
Max

No idea on the rudder stuff... I like to keep it simple -mooching for salmon is awesome. That's a sleek looking kayak tho  :yak

I had two necky dolphins that already had the rudders installed when I bought them (used) in 1996 I think.  The rudders were aluminum and looked factory installed.  So I can't help with installing aftermarket.  I'll search for pictures, but I don't know if I have any digital ones.

Man, I sure liked those kayaks though.  They were the most fun once you got a hang of the initial stability issues.  Fast, nimble, and responsive in the surf.

Good luck.

You might want to reach out to Dan, I think his handle on here is paddleboy84 on here or you can reach him on instagram at Headwaters Kayak. He has worked on a few dolphins and spikes.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll reach out to Dan. These kayaks are remarkably capable and fast as hell. I can usually out paddle my buddies in hobies...

That’d be awesome Spinal Tap. Just a picture to look at/go off of would be great!

I’ve got a necky tandem from the same era - here are a couple quick pics of the factory rudder system.

Hey Road Warrior

A Necky Dolphin just popped up on Clist and it looks to have a factory rudder system - ad includes pics for you.
