those blues are an awesome game fish.  on my last trip to cape cod my brother and i caught many of the ferocious beasts from our kayaks.  come to think of it my first fishing experiences where from the jersey shore when i was 8, catching blues and fluke of the beach.
i think the only relative of the bluefish lives on the atlantic coast of africa, no doubt the species shown in the above photo.

There's a fish called tailor in Australia that is essentially a bluefish, although I only saw small ones...
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

The tailor is a bluefish.  So is the shad (or elf) as they call it in Africa.

Sounds like you had a great time on and off the water. Thanks for the report! Looks like we should post your picture on the Women of NCKA thread, don't you think?

I tried toro in baja.  Not my favorite (mmm scallops), but it tasted fine grilled after a full day on the water with aching arms from catching them.

Anyway, I miss bluefish!  My first kayak fishing experience was during grad school in Long Island, NY (mid 90's).  I had been renting a house on the Long Island Sound with some other graduate students, one of which owned a plastic sea kayak (sit inside of some sort).  Anyway, I'd borrow it and troll the beach in the summer.  A 15 lb blue on a bass rod was my first introduction to a sleigh ride.  As for taste, I found that once I landed the fish, if I immediately paddled the 200 yds back to my beach, cleaned the fish and started the grill they were quite tasty.  The leftovers however weren't so great.  Oh, and they are delicious smoked.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... The Ranch... I fell in love with that place. I can't wait to get back there. That first picture of that roundish rock out there in front of the beach is a great place to snorkel. I freaked my girlfriend out taking her out there. I saw a morey eel and dragged her out to see it... she didn't like that to much. That eel was huge too... Then, I got into the jellies... not fun... Those little roosters are cute. Those must've been a blast to hook into. Those toro are pretty much the bulls of the sea. They fight like crazy... lots of fun. Can't wait to get back there...

Tell me about it!  The Ranch rocks - I spotted a couple of eels while diving for oysters near the round rock.  They were pretty young,  but very cheecky :smt001.  With regard the roosters - although they were small...... boy they sure packed some punch.  We would paddle through a school of bait fish and just watch as our lures were being hit behind the kayak.  The frenzy as they hit the lures was so cool - it was hard to keep paddling at speed knowing that at any time it could be fish on!

Vic's Jack put up a tremendous fight - a good solid 30 minutes of being towed side on into wind and waves.  He was so pumped when he landed it.  The only credit I can take is that I tied the knots on the leader and hook and they held!!!!!!!   :smt003
