Coho watching

My wife surprised me with a trip to watch the spawning salmon in Lagunitas creek yesterday. I'd never seen our local salmon in fresh water before, and I learned a lot from the guide, Catie Clune.

It was amazing to see how the females wear their tails down to bone digging their nests. Total commitment.

For us it definitely was. The $35 covered the whole family, supports good work, and included entrance to the park. A lot cheaper than taking the kids to see a movie.

If money is tight you could do a little research and put together your own self-guided tour for free.

If you dont want to go on the tour, you can go on a self-guided creekwalk in the same area. Just check out the Leo Cronin Fish Viewing Station in Lagunitas. There's a quick walk through woods along Lagunitas Creek to the spillway at Kent Lake with spots to see coho and steelhead along the entire path.

As KPD said, theres definitely worse uses of $35 for a few hours of family entertainment.

You guys should do your homework on who you are supporting. Spawn is a big part of why we couldn’t get a net pen for salmon smolts in Bodega bay.

They are a controversial group in the local area that is more interested in a few pet salmon to look at in the creek than having a healthy sustainable fishery in the ocean for all to enjoy.

Thanks for pointing that out, Otter. I know that groups focused on wild fish populations are often at odds with those advocating for hatchery programs, so unfortunately I'm not surprised.

Haven't been out there this year, but usually the beds are marked with surveyors tape in a nearby tree. So if you are doing the self guided thing you can look for the tape to find the beds...

Cool man, I love and support wild salmon also but our problems with water and habitat etc are so big that I support the hatcheries too. And yes I’m a little salty that we can’t have net pens in Bodega.
