line counter reels

Has anyone had any luck with line counter reels?  I've had three (2 okuma, 1 penn) and the line counter mechanisms all failed within 6 months.  I'm guessing its because of the saltwater splash from kayak fishing gets in there quick

So far so good with my Daiwa Lexa line counter. I have only used it since Spring, but servicing the line counter was easy.

The line counter on my Okuma low profile reel stopped working, and I couldn’t get it working again after a few minutes of fiddling.

I am interested to hear what others say.

My Shimano Tekota is still running strong after a year of salty abuse. I love it. I give it a good rinse after every trip, and so far so good.

My Okuma freshwater trolling reels give me problems too. It’s not because of the salt.

I have two Shimano Tekota reels and the line counters have continued to work fine. They seem to be pretty accurate on the depth reading at least compared to the reading on my depth finder.

I like using the line counter when trolling with a Deep Six Diver to calculate the depth of the lure/bait.

Diawa47lc   Have been in use for 8 years. No problems with the line counter at all. Rinse and clean. Never submerged totally in salt yet.

The line counter stopped working consistently after 2 weeks and the window fogs up. But the reel is good, I guess. I don't have a lot of experience w/conventionals.  Simplycook has the same reel and his line counter works "ok".

after my shark encounter my okuma coldwater is now toast lol the line counter was replaced once and then quit working. I tried to open up the okuma reel and it doesn't look like it can be serviceable or not easily. I took out all the visable screw and still not able to open it.

I replace it with a lexa 400 line counter. I was gonna go with the shimano but the lexa is left hand reel. So far it has been working great. I love the clicker on it, its super loud!

My Tekota 500 is a beast, still counting after 3 or 4 years

I've owned a number of Okuma Convector and Magnapro line counter level wind trolling reels, which I use for both kayak fishing and ice fishing on fresh water, and have never had a line counter stop working.  But they have had other problems, particularly with breakage of the spring which controls the spool release.  I've become pretty good at replacing that spring.  I own a couple of Okuma Coldwater line counter level wind trolling reels, which appear to have higher quality construction, but haven't used them long enough for any problems to develop.

Bummer to hear about the Okuma reels. They are really nice looking. I use the Lexa 400 and Tekota 600, both LC. Both tanks in my opinion. But i favor my Tekota..just my preference
