What's up NCKA -

I'll be staying at DL Bliss State Park next week, which is just north of Emerald Bay.  I go every year but this will be the first time i have a nice hobie revo kayak.  I was thinking about bringing it up and fishing for some mackinaw trout.  Does anyone have any tips?  I have a fish finder, but all of my gear is set up for salt water fishing (salmon, rock fish etc).

What kind of lures do i need?  Do i need a diver to get to deep water?  Do i troll or jig?  where do these spectacular fish hang out?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

Mackinaw are pretty much freshwater lingcod and will eat similar stuff to them...2/3oz p line jigs are my favorite.  they hang out on dropoffs and underwater humps from 70-250ft deep. Check for contours on a bathymetric type map or your favorite gps software like navionics.

I camped at Bliss last week for 5 days and each morning (7-9am) the charter boats were right off Lester Beach about 1000 yards out. Not sure if they were catching kokes or Mackinaw, but that's the first year (in past 10) where the charters were stacked up right there. Good luck!

most likely if they were all there then they were chasing kokanee.  that's a pretty common staging area for the koks.

I caught my first Mack along the wall just south of Bliss thanks to Tote - an OG NCKA dude!

Go early, jig something ridiculously big in 200' or based on marks in the ranges that bmb advised.  You can get these things on ocean gear like a 4 ounce Diamond jig!  Go a little more finesse than that, and be ready with a stringer or a trough with extension!

Have fun.  :smt001
