After several decades of having my dad/mom/buddies/girlfriends and now wife hold spools of line on a pencil and trying to explain to them how to tension it properly  without burning their hands from the friction... I finally made a simple little tool for the job using some bits and pieces I had laying around the garage.

Works great! Just twist the nuts to apply the right amount of squeeze to the felt pads.

Great idea, TLW is my tensioner I just leave the spool in a box so she can squeeze the box without spool rash.

Just twist the nuts to apply the right amount of squeeze to the felt pads.
with this group you chose THAT for wording?  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt008

Beats my method hands down, I put a rod through the spool and throw a plastic mat on the floor and rest my feet on the rod and add tension as I think it should be.  Very unscientific.

that's a great idea!

I've used a screwdriver stabbed through the spool, and then chucked the business end of the screwdriver into a bench vise to establish tension. Similar to your idea just not as slick.

I used a drill driver with a stick in it to remove old line, worked like a charm. Line just wraps up around the stick easy peasy.

I do the same thing to unspool line if I'm feeling crafty. Otherwise I just pull it off by the armload, ball it up, tie it up in an old plastic bad, and toss it... I try not to throw away big wads of loose fishing line since it fucks with the "wildlife" (gulls) at the landfill.
