Salmon season opened a few days ago at Shelter Cove and points south. With Sunday's ocean still a mess from the recent wind I had to cancel a trip for that day, so it would be a non-guide day for me and a bunch of friends for Monday. The ocean was outstanding, and out of about 15 kayakers on the water most of them were experienced salmon fishermen. If there were fish around we were going to get on them.

Matthew got it going early and called Domenic and I in to where he and Rob were on some fast action. Mr. Mayes ends up limiting before we even got over there, and the rest of the group started getting a pretty steady stream of hookups. 5 of us ended up limiting on a nice grade of kings, and by the end of the day about 16 salmon were landed to kayaks - all of them about 30" or better. This was notable because the powerboat fleet down at the Hat and the Old Man was struggling with shakers and coho for much of the day. This was the day for the kayak!

There was also a pretty amazing by-catch that had to be released by the Innkeeper, Mr. Kaai - see photos for that beauty.

I've got dates open. Whether you're looking for an introduction to the sport and need outfitting or, even better, if you've got your own yak and gear and are looking to take your skills to the next level, let's get on it!
