Hi
With Lake Oroville filling up again wondering how kayak fishing is at the lake for bass?  They always advertise as being one of top bass fishing locations. But haven’t seen any posts here? Is it more of a power boat fishing location? It’s part of the California state parks so if you have a poppy pass it’s included. Or are the rivers downstream more fun for kayakers?

You should have no problem catching spotted bass there. Carolina rig morning dawn robo worms. Bobber and crappie jigs with 3 inch white zoom flukes right up near the bank.

You can catch 12 - 15" spotted bass all day long.  Up the South fork is where most the tourney guys fish.  I like using Wacky rigged Senko worms.

Lately it the hot bite has been at the Afterbay according to reports.  Eventhough I live 5 minutes from Lime Saddle I'm usually fishing somewhere else.

I believe there are landlocked Steelhead from the local hatchery placed on Oroville. Is this correct?
Anyone?

When I was a CSUC student, we frequently fished lime saddle (negro bar) using live shiner minnows under a water bobber. I liked using bobber stops so that I could set a specific depth to fish the minnow, years ago when they still planted coho in Oroville, this was equally effective for the spots and salmon. Maybe the Kings will behave similarly?

I think they stock them in the afterbay which is just below Oroville.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Yes.  the steelhead are planted in the Afterbay and landlocked Chinook are planted in the main lake.  Most guys troll for the Chinooks around the dam area and from the dam up past what is known as the Green bridge.  However I know of friends that have caught the Chinooks in the Nelson Bar area too.

If I was gonna travel to that area to 'yak bass fish I'd personally hit the afterbay...easy access, lots of great structure and it grows a few big bass....I've never had my 'yak in it (yet), but I've gotten a few fair fish just driving around to the tules in my aluminum boat and bouncing wacky rigged sencos right off the weeds (I'm a total novice bass angler so others probably have WAY better ideas...lol).
Always walk a mile in someone's shoes before criticizing them.  That way when the criticizing begins, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Unless my wife has last minute other plans for me tomorrow I plan to hit the afterbay tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

Just sounds like a good place to be with (probably still small) landlocked steelhead as well as bass.... might have one line out to catch some trout... and cast for some bass.
Still a novice as well with one year of fishing experience, but hope this will be more successful than Folsom Lake.

Is there area recommended for Yaks?  I hate wakes from boats and noisy places.  I think there is section with speed limit?

Was planning to launch from Monument hill or is there less busy kayak fitting spot? I have mine top loaded on my car.

Sending good vibes your way and good luck out there.  I'm not familiar with fishing where you are going but have heard good things, but also avoid being there during duck season or you may get hit with the crossfire......  I hear you about Folsom.  Looks like I have a long to do list so hopefully I will be out again next weekend.  A quiet trout lake that is small is Fuller Lake up 80 near Lake Spaulding.  No motorized boats allowed and a decent beach launch with easy access.  I have only had my kayak since April so my experience is from shore, but I have seen a few kayaks launch there.

Well.
I kayaked 15 miles launching at 8 am.  Most of the time searching for fish on my fish finder. Didn’t realize how much south I explored so the 5 miles back were quite the workout.
On north side the water was 10 degrees colder and could not detect any fish.  I was hoping for some top water action.
Made my way down south of bridge.  But only fish I saw was 10-15 yard deep suspended and not in shallows or around the reed.

Was 8 hours on the water and only saw one other boat trying to catch bass. Not best time to fish in heat of day. But I had feeling others knew that maybe time for best bite at the place might be over?
Or maybe I just still too much of beginner and not anchoring down and trying to get those suspended fish. It’s only 15-20 yards deep so not many deep holes to hide. Not much structure either and the reed is rather thick. Lots of shallows areas but only saw carp there.  My next trip will be up the foothills.

Bummer but any day fishing.....  I’m hoping to get up to Rollins next week unless I hear that the Folsom bite is on. Anyone else out there having any luck in the Sacramento and foothills areas?  Are bullards bar or Englebright good for kayaks?  I’ve only been on the water for 6 weeks so wanting to hear from the experienced.  You all are great with your help. Thanks
David
