I'd presume most fish finders are water resistant. You can find out yourself by looking at its IP rating (in product description, owners manual). For example, the Lowrance Hook series finders have an IPX7 rating. Meaning they can  withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.
How this holds up in practice is another matter. I'd definitely follow advice others have given.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned. Can't see some posts in Tapatalk.

Most, if not all, fish finders have appropriate IP rating.  However, don't rely on that.  Do your part to increase its chance of survival.  If a boat flips, he/she has other things to worry about.  If a kayak flips, we can get back up.

Somebody (Keith?) mentioned about putting dielectric grease on the card slot, does that work?

He said seal the map card slot. You won’t be able to use it after that though. Grease would make it unuseable as well I imagine.

My bottom budget, Eagle Cuda 250 is water proof, according to manual, I have not had opportunity to test it though.  Sadly its not the new 3-d technology.

If you decide to add an SD card later, you can open it up and degrease with Q-tip.  On most cases, it should be fairly easy.

I'll let someone else try degreasing the card slot. I know its dielectric grease, but I wouldn't assume you'll get good data transfer through it.

I use my card slot and remove the card to download navionics platinum updates monthly on a lowrance hook 7.  My cover is pretty snug, and I use a little tape to hold it in place.

I dunked my Humminbird and the guy is right, they are rain resistant but not waterproof. Luckily I went through all of the damn warranty paperwork and sent it back to Humminbird. Although the FF was out of warranty, they replaced it with a brand new one for like $50.

Tape is a good idea. I try to press it closed before launching and make sure its fully closed.
