I got my brother out on a 'yak for his first time today, we launched out of leffingwell at about 7:00 am, the wind was not too bad maybe 4 or 5 knots with calm periods in between.  we get out and his third drop down, he nailed his first fish from a yak. a  yellow and black.  a few minutes later he nailed his first ling a nice 27"er.  I was stoked for him. we paddled to right out in front of San Simeon SP. he caught another nice 25" ling, I got a nice 25" ling as well, and another 24"+/- that was borderline so was released. also caught one shorty ling.  My brother caught to short cabby's.  We had some other various rock fish as well.  I also pulled up a short Halibut only 17" but fun none the less.   In a matter of a bout 10 minutes at 10:45 the wind and swell picked up big time, and was easily blowing 15-20 knots, which forced us off the water.  All in all a pretty good day for my bro's first trip ever, I think he's hooked! a few pics below : brother's first Ling, My 25 " ling, his second Ling ever, my second of the day, and my short Halibut.   :smt001

Nice work dogpound!  What were you guys using and where exactly was your launch point in San Simeon?

My father-in-law and I are going down to his house in Cambria memorial day weekend and are looking to get out on the water to do some fishing.  Do you know any good places to rent fishing-rigged kayaks?  We were thinking about Cayucos (sp?)  We've tried "Sea For Yourself Kayaks" out of Cambria but they weren't very reliable and we know that there are places to rent +/- 20 miles from Cambria.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Ethan

Ethan,

there is a place in Cayucos on the main drag, called Good Clean Fun, they have Kayaks, Ocean Kayaks, I think. I don't know if they are rigged for fishing (rod holders, Etc.) but they do have them, also there is a place in morro bay, I 'll get the name for you, that has them, again I don't know if they have any fishing rigged Yaks.

a real easy place to launch, were we launched this morning, is Leffeingwell landing
on the north end of Moonstone Beach Dr. back right down to the beach and a protected launch, usually just knee high surf.  you can go north towards san simeon, straight out, or to the south a lot of good water to search.  we were just using 2.5 oz. lead heads with white scampi tails, and leadheads with a 6" anchovy swim bait. in 35-50 ft of water.  but  any type of jigs should produce.

Pj and littoral can tell you about Harvey street launch, another spot in Cambria off Ardath dr.

post in hook-ups and maybe we can meet up as I'm pretty sure I will be fishing hat weekend to.

Ethan,

See Steve at Good Clean Fun ([email protected]). There's also another guy, Todd who rents out of San Simeon ([email protected]). Both of them helped with the effort to save Harvey St.

glad you guys had fun.  i went out quick this a.m., was pretty bumpy again.  fishing was slow, looked like the water was cloudy.

got 6 yellows, a medium sized Vermillion & an underLing.  not as good as the other day but next weekend i'm firing up the smoker.

Thanks for the updates!   We need to get together a san simeon rockfish day!   :yak

Harvey street is a great launch spot- although I talked to a guy that got rolled there and was knocked out-  he owns the house right above the launching slot.  He said that someone was down on the beach and had to pull him out of the soup.

Come to think of it, the only time I got rolled in the surf was there too!

i'm down for going any time next week or thereafter.

sounds like good sized south swell around next tues getting bigger into wednesday, which will most likely cloud up the water & shut down the bite.
