05-05-07 Kids Fish Day-

My boys wanted to join in on all the fun at the perc ponds in Campbell Saturday. Great... I figured I could take them out on the yak and catch a couple of fish and be done with the madness. The wind was howling when we got there, so we decided to leave the yak on the truck and foot it. Found a nice little spot for nothing. Found another nice little spot and landed a couple of planters... yahoo... the boys were stoked and daddy was happy to get them on a couple of fish. Amazingly, I didn't get snagged by any of the other million kids there. Didn't lose any gear, didn't have to deal with untangling two, three or four different rods... Done...

Kids Fish Day part II

My boys had so much fun on Saturday, they wanted to join in on the madness again today. Great... Jr. woke up at 6am and was ready to hit it by 6:10. (Ethan didn't make the morning bell... poor little puppy... he was so tired. I didn't have the heart to wake him up... but, he joined up with us later.) Anyways, we hit the perc ponds again and Jr didn't want to take the yak out again... He wanted to go to the same spot where we hooked up the day before. So, off we went... unfortunately, there were a billion other youngsters already there. Some of those guys were there from 5:30am. Talk about hard core... Anyways, we found a nice little spot to set up camp not too far away. Jr hooked into a nice trout right off the bat and the day was off to a great start. And that was it for a long while. Melissa and Ethan joined up with us and the little guy got one right away. I figure that a school was cruising through since the guys on either side of us hooked up too. And that was it for a long while. Today was pretty much as bad as it gets. I basically got spooled by a bunch of kids that kept on snagging my lines and cutting my off. Great... I lost some tackle but nothing major. By the end of the day, one reel only had enough line on it to cast 10 yards out. Another had enough line to get out about 20 yards. Luckily, I had a back up to get out there to where the fish were. Evan and Ethan tag teamed to bring in 5 fish by the end of the day. It was a long and miserable day for daddy... but, the boys had a great time so, it was pretty much worth it. I can handle my boys killing me but, there were at least 3 or 4 other kids that kept bugging me for bait, hooks, lures, even to tie them up and cast them out... these boys were a bit older so, I didn't question where their dad was... it just made it tough for me to keep my boys occupied.  Oh well... it only comes once a year right...?

Way to go!  I used to volunteer there and yeah...it was a lot work!!  I had to untangle, and tie countless rigs!   It was fun getting kids on the fish though.

Thank you for being there for the other kids that did not have a role model. there the ones that have the gumption to go (even without dad). you helped show them theres better things to do then be out causing trouble. You made a difference!  Randall

Bill-

I didn't get out of there without an injury. I jacked my foot up pretty good chasing after Ethan who took a tumble down a hill. But he's more of a savage than his old man... he just laughed, while I was wincing in pain. I ended up limping around for most of the day. Also, thanks to Jr... I got hooked pretty good on the thumb while trying to unhook a trout. Luckily, the barb didn't get me... whew... what a long day that was. Those boys of mine... they're going to kill me one of these days.

Randall-

No thanks needed. I'm sure any one of us would have done the same thing. I'm always happy to help a kid out... especially when it comes to fishing.

On a side note... I should've taken the boys up to Mendo. Sounds like everybody got into the fish up there... Save some for me...!
