I set up a 35 gallon tank with ocean water in my garage.  there is a pump, filter etc...  .  I was planning on catching shiners and other small bait to keep so I was prepared at all times.

Has anyone had luck with this?   Or am I taking it a little too far?

Great idea - I thought of doing that myself.  I'd be more than willing to buy bait from you if you ever follow-up with your plans  :smt002

I would never charge fellow fisherman for bait.  The tank is set and ready to go, I just need the bait fish.  I am going to the Pacifica pier today to catch some shiners. Hopefully.  The wind has been so bad that I couldn't get out yesterday.

I kept 2 smoothound sharks in a 55 for about a month before sending them home again, so they aught to do fine as long as it doesn't get too hot.

Jason - put me in for an order of live bait for the Santa Cruz derby on the 12th.  :smt023 I'll try to make bait at Redwoodshores as well. Keep us posted on your setup. I may just follow your lead and get one going myself :smt004

So who is going bait fishing the saturday evening before the derby?  I plan on it, but am not sure when/where yet.

Allen - I definitely will (I hate paying for live bait  :smt013 ). I may try leaving a trap overnight in RedwoodShores OR patch the hole on my cast net and try throwing it at HMB (inside the boat harbor)

....or kiss Jason's ass in case I don't catch any bait  :smt058  :moon

Dear Fellow Yakers:

Sound like a lot of fun but, many may die during the trip back to the Ocean.  Might be better to rent some dock space and, have a large bait
box like the "Live Fish Guys". Salt water tanks need Instance-Ocean and a chiller.
Hauling Salt Water around is a little heavy and,  tends to make a mess of everything.
Salt water tanks can be a lot of fun but, are more costly.
I had a Fresh water 100 Gal. that was "food for my Head" Better that T.V. if you place a false Back-drop with, fun things you have collected at the Sea-shore.

Joel, will you kiss Jason's ass for me too?

I have an idea.  Let's go down to SC that evening, fish baits in the harbor, and camp in the parking lot.  Then we'll be ready at first light.

I seen quite a few people catching small shiner perch on the wharf(SC) last weekend, sabiki tipped with shrimp next to the pilings seemed to work pretty well.  A few jacksmelt as well but not as many.

I just moved to Santa Cruz (actually, still in the process) and have been out on West Cliff (between Natural bridges and the lighthouse) several times in the last week. There were pelicans (~20) diving on bait one day and a flock of murres (? about 50) chasing bait another. Both times, the action was just inside the kelp.  There must be a decent school of something hanging around there.
It has been windy with whitecaps offshore all week, but calming down now.

Allen - I like the idea of camping by the parking lot on Saturday - but I don't think they allow that.  Unless, there is some other place to camp nearby  :smt017

I'm just going to get an end tie for the Triple and sleep on it.   You can sleep in the hold, um I mean lower deck, if you want.  Bring your BBQ.  I have the perfect place to mount it.  :smt002

Seriously, I'm looking for options for making bait on Saturday evening.  I think Brian G will be fishing off Capitola pier.  I just might join him.
