Hi all,

Launched out of leffingwell  @ 6:00 am and headed north about two miles so I was just north of the beach across from San Simeon SP.  The wind was almost non exsistent until about 1:30 and even then I would have stayed out longer if I didn't have to go work on the WAF account. the swell was pretty good size but with no wind it was definitely manageable( along with some dramamine).  I had another good day, started off a little slow, but then turned out great,  Had three lings (24", 25", 25" released) and several shorty lings.  had two good sized reds both over 15", four Legal cabby's largest being 18"  and a good variety of kelp bass, black and yellow's, and gopher's and ( I am pretty sure) a male kelp greenling that was just over 12" so it went back since I had plenty of fish. here a few pictures one of the reds, one of the short lings I released and two of the three Cabby's I sent back. and the greenling  sorry about the photos not the greatest. I am still trying to figure the sun and  shadows and other factors to taking a good picture. Hell i've only had a digital camera for like 4 months now. A little behind the times but I'm learning.

I launched at 6 and pulled back in to leffingwell at 1:45, but with the weather how it was I wanted to be out there for longer but had to go build the WAF account!

Thank you,

Started of with a 2.5 red leadhead and 6" rootbeer scampi tail cut down about an inch so the hook was closer to the end of the body, then switched to a smaller bait 1.5 ounce head with 4" white scampi tail got most of them on the smaller bait, and got two of the lings on a 2.5 ounce blue leadhead and anchovy body single tail swim bait.  I don't know why but on opening day and sunday I had the most success with the down sized bait versus the bigger head and body.l

Nice goin', Dog!

The water clarity in your first pic is phenomenal.

Great idea to cut the scampis down to put the hook closer to the tail(s).  I'm gonna give that a try.  Do you paint your own leadheads or buy them that way?

Randy

it was so nice that day I could see the fish a good ten twelve feet below(my estimate) in the direct sun, it was awesome.  hope that tip helps, I didn't come up with it a buddy of mine gave it to me, so always happy to forward them on. one day I had a brand new scampi on and was getting hammered but no hook ups and pull it up to see a lot of teeth marks below the hook, so my friend said to just start cutting down the bodies for those darn short strikers.  I buy the heads already painted.  and like to cut the bigger 6" scampis down to 5 or 4" because the tails are bigger with more action than the standard 4" out of the package.
