For those interested in Mothership opportunities along the Northcoast (Humboldt) We have a 36' 6 passenger open deck sportfishing boat rigged to carry kayaks out safely across the Humboldt bar to fish Salmon, Halibut (california & pacific) Lingcod, Rockfish and Dungeness. The boats Capt Phil Glenn is a legend in these waters. With 30 years experience as sportfisherman He always finds the fish. My role as guide is to outfit you with top of the line gear, insure your safety out on the big blue and help to land the big one. We provide malibu kayaks (X-factors-Extremes), Rods reels and bait, drinks and snacks. For insurance purposes you have to use our boats but are welcome to bring your own fishing gear and tackle. Phil is giddy about this season, saying it's going to be one of the best on the Northcoast in years. Resevations should be made at least week ahead of time.  We cast off at 6 am and usually limit out by noon but will stay out till 2:00 if needed. Cost is $150 per individual $400 for a group of four ($50 each add) For inquiries or further details contact Hawk at (707) 443-5157 No prior experience necessary.

That looks really good Hawk.  I will be keeping an eye out for more information and hope to make it up there for a trip or two this summer.

Hey Hawk, that sounds great. Just wish someone would do something like that here out of Bodega Bay.  I'm going to check me schedule to see if I can swing a trip to Humboldt in the near future.

Swellrider ... any chance at a tuna run?  Let me know if you would consider this and I'll be the first person to sign up.  Middle of August?

Hawk,  Post some reprots once you get out there so that we know what we will be in for if and when we come up there.  What is the salmon bite like out of Humbolt these days?  It sucks in Montery Bay.

It's all still experimental. Nobody has done anything like this up here so far. I'll have to post lots of pics and video to show the posssibilities. The ride out through Humboldt Jetty alone is worth it. My own experiences mothershipping were leading Guided trips out to the Coronados Islands from San Diego Bay. It was more technical sea kayaking but good preparation for the Northcoast nonetheless.

Tuna?? How far would we have to go-

Tuna?? How far would we have to go-

On average:  40-50 miles - it's all dependent on the water change, cold to warm around 65 degrees...  I've considered this myself as my dad is all hot to get tuna on his PB, but he doesn't think we could troll near fast enough.  Dumping the yaks in and casting for them where the fish are going off may be the only way to hook one up on the yak.

Etienne:  I've heard that sport salmon landings out of Humboldt Bay have historically been some of the best along the west coast.  The season opens here this Saturday, May 5.

I look forward to Hawk's reports of mothership trips, but I'll continue mothershipping using my Silverado for now!   :smt003

Cold to warm at 60 degrees actually, the harder the break the better.  They'll come closer than 40-50 miles but it isn't predictable by any means.

Let's see if it's a possibility and if so, we'll book a date.  If the tuna aren't near, we'll change plans and fish elsewhere.
