Has anybody here ever had any solid luck keeping a solid speed while trolling for salmon with a deep six paddling?  Or should I just dust the cob webs off the sardine can?

No to the second.

I find a deep six is a PITA to troll with; but that's just me.
I use a banana sinker of the appropriate weight with a 4' (yes 4') leader.
That's it.

What do you consider a "solid speed?"

The most important thing is action on your bait.  I would use a sliding sinker with RSK or something like that.  Weight on the sliding rig would depend on your speed, but I would use probably a 10oz, 8oz minimal.  You need to be 1mph or more for a good rotation on the bait.

Faster is better to cover ground and find fishy area.

You are asking one of the 3 most secrets/recipe(my secret anyway).
It took me solid 2 years to figure it out.
I don't catch all the salmon but I have caught my fair share of them.

You catch rate will improve tremendously once you figure that out for yourself. My advice is to go out and fish. When you get several skunk trip, then later you reward with a limit then note down what you do right. Keep adding them to your logbook(between your ears).
A couple years go by you will be surprised you could not eat salmon fast enough to free up your freezer space.

Yes. Lots of people have caught salmon using DD6 divers from paddle kayaks. If you can maintain a speed somewhere in the 1-3 knot range, you're good to go. Some baits work just fine (or even better sometimes) at slower speeds - like "straight bait" or cut plug herring, some work better at faster speeds - like spoons for example.

Pick a bait/lure that looks good at the speed you can paddle, and you'll be good to go.

Also, you don't need to keep a constant speed. In fact, you should try to vary your speed, make turns, stop, start, zig zag, etc. Anything to make your bait look more natural and lifelike.

I use dd6's, drop weights, and banana weights depending on where I'm fishing. I second the 1-3 knots. Try different things.

I also agree that there's not one secret recipe. Trial and error are keys to success. Try trolling different spoons with flashers while paddling out to your spot, when you get there switch it up to something slower and troll into the wind. When you make it far enough switch it up to head back. Either let the wind push you or go with something that trolls faster.
