I decided to play hookey today and hit oyster point for some butts.  I was not able to get any live bait, but it was so flat calm out there all day that there wouldn't have been much of a drift anyhoo.

I trolled a DJB rig (flasher, white hoochie no hook, white hoochie with hook, herring on hook with stinger) on a 16 oz banana weight dropper and a large herring on the end.  I got slammed once at around noon on the outgoing tide in 17 feet of water right out in front of OP.  Wound up being a shorty... right on the cusp of 22 inches... too close for comfort... back he went.  Boy... when they hit on the troll they really whack em... that was fun.

That was it for the day.  Got a sunburn too.

Lots of boats working the area... talked to a few of them who had one or two fish each.

There are fish in there... good tides this weekend. Good luck to whoever gets out.

Eric,
Great report, I too would love to see the pic of that rig.  I almost played hookie myself as I think Bill was going to head out too.  I decided to keep my sick days for the opener.

Here's the DJB rig from the post on coastside.

http://www.coastsidefishingclub.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=Tackle&Number=339945&fpart=&PHPSESSID=

I use a small wire spreader at the top of the rig, it really keeps things from fouling up.  I also shorten the distance between the spreader and the flasher/dodger... probably to about 10 inches or so.  The rig really trolls well.  With the herring or chovie on the end, you want to hook the stinger down far enough that it creates a slight bend in the herring.  This will cause the herring/chovie to spiral when trolled and the whole rig looks really scrumptious.

I was using the smaller of these two flashers... which is really more of a dodger.  I've used the big triangular one before too and had hits on it last year.

Nice job...I was listening to the fishing reports this am ( 1140 am, 5 to 8 ) and there were reports of many halibut caught out there (op) on frozen anchovies, could be a ruse to divert the masses,

But I was a wishing that Frank and I went Fishin, Oyster point instead of Montezuma on Thursday.

Glad ya made it out....Danglin
