Icomm and Standard Horizon are both good brands. I personally use Icomm.

I personally chose a model that doesn't float (Icomm M73). It's less bulky than the floating models and it has a longer battery life. (They make them float by shaving battery weight and increasing the size of the housing until it's less dense than water.) I also have a floating Icomm that I use as a spare/loaner. It's a good radio, I just don't like the bulkiness.

Whether you choose a floating model or not, it should be leashed to your PFD (not to your kayak - in case you get separated). The leash pretty much negates the need for a floating radio. It ain't going anywhere.

+1.  I use the below to clip the radio to my PFD (I crimped the ends just to be sure it won't separate under stress).

If you don't have one already, I highly recommend a sonar unit that includes GPS. I'm happy with my Lowrance Hook 5 unit. Being able to plot your tracks, and mark reefs, etc, is priceless

I also keep a handheld Garmin GPS in a dry bag in the hull (with spare batteries) and I keep my iPhone (in a waterproof case) in one of my PFD pockets.

Some might say thats overkill, but I say "Better safe than sorry"...

Thanks Alex - I do have a GPS-enabled sonar unit (Hook 4).  I also have a standalone GPS that is much more accurate and user-friendly for marking hot spots, so I will likely bring that as well - in addition to my iPhone in a Lifeproof case.

I've been fishing off the kayak for salmon 4 times now. Not tooo into going out alone on my kayak.  Anyone into going out of HMB tomorrow?

Good luck guys,I hooked 4 salmon last weekend on the lovely Martha and.brought the 2 biggest home.took 5 hours to get 61 fish for the boat.then I saw a buddy he had 6 customers on his 6 pack boat catch 12 salmon in 25 minutes.

My skills... I'm new to kayak fishing and no where near ready to tackle the ocean. Next season, I will try, but for now I need to build up my skills.
