Legal but unnecessary. I'll out fish you w 12" plastic worm or scampi any day for lings and cabbies.

I accept.  How much would you like to wager?  I get to pick the time and place.  Total number of inches of up to 2 lings and 3 cabbies for a total of 5 fish wins.

I caught 5 lings on a single blue rockfish not long ago. Even dead they would hit it almost instantly. Not a single one was hooked, they were all hitchhikers. My dad and I went out the other day on a party boat and everybody was using shrimp flies and squid. I put a big ass swimbait on and had the best quality fish by far. They caught a lot of fish, but I caught a lot of really big fish. I caught this yellow eye and several Verms and lots of lings on the swimbait. My new favorite set-up.

I don't live bait enough.  Kind of lazy I guess?
However, the times I made a point to fish with a Greenling as bait has resulted in bigger fish.

Example:  10 mins in to fishing, I nabbed a 12" Greenling on a small jig.   Reattached as bait on a bigger rod and spent an hour towing that thing around structure until a 19# Cabby took a swipe at the Geenling.  In some divine occurrence, both fish where now each hooked firmly in their upper lips with the same hook.  The Greenling wasn't looking too happy with half his face twisted in a nasty formation completely stuck to the lips of the huge Cabby.
