No road issues other than a few one way controls and the clusterfuck that is last chance grade just south of crescent city.

Are you fishing?  Who all is going, any kids?

Shelter Cove is only about 35 minutes from 101 - worth checking out even if you don't have a yak with you.

Have a great trip.  :smt001

Red tail perch on most any beach near river mouths. Camping at state parks if you can get a spot is good.  See Larry at Lex's Landing on the Rogue in gold beach he can hook you up and might have campsites available.  Humbug Mtn state park just south of port Orford is good campingd.  PO has decent seafood but bandon is better. You can drop crab pots in Bandon too. Coos Bay/North Bend is a cool spot and renting a dune buggy is a hoot. Florence is skippable, unless you want to dig some purple varnish clams in the siuslaw estuary. Newport has jetty fishing and a cool waterfront with several options for chowder. The Rogue brewery is there on the other side of the bay next to the state aquarium and is worth a visit. Beverly beach just north of Newport and south of depoe bay is a very popular campground and is probably booked already, it's more of a family destination than an overnight stop tho. Depoe Bay is fun and has whale watching and more chowder opportunities. Lincoln City likewise has a lot to do and see and there is camping on the siletz river as well as springer opportunities from shore. Tillamook Bay has jetty fishing and jetty camping, good clamming and spots to pick off sea run cutthroat from shore. Mojo Jojo lives there in garibaldi. Seaside is a resort town with expensive and delicious chowder options. Astoria has good beer and the Goonies tour.

What way do you want to go through Washington, up the peninsula or cut over to south Puget Sound through Aberdeen?

Driving solo. Not bringing a kayak, but might bring a surf/spin rod to fish a jetty or something along the way. Just a truck, cooler with some beer, and sleeping bag. Heading up to Seattle to get a little fishing boat to bring back south. I guess fishing would mean getting a daily license, so I might just skip it once I leave the CA coast.

Love to stop in at some harbors and jetties, camp with a nice campfire, eat some fish and chips along the way, check out anything cool, etc.
If I'm available and you want to buy a 3 day license, pitch a  tent at Oldmill RV Park and the tides are right, a have 3 kayaks and am forcibly retired. I think ghosts, bunny, Hobie Dave, and Fish-N-Brew might even vogue for me (but I do have witnesses and an alibi) just in case  :smt044 shoot me a pm on the time frame and pending your size I might have a wetsuit you can borrow. I'm 2 minutes from Tillamook Bay launch and 30 minutes from Pacific City if the ocean cooperates.

I just got back from Gold Beach last weekend.
If you stop there  highly recommend the 104 mile round trip jet boat ride up the Rogue River. Jerry's Jet Boats.
Pure awesome.

Thanks for the kind offer, Mojo! I don't think I have time for a half day of yak fishing, but love to hear about places to stay up that way (sleeping in truck, ideally with a campfire pit to sit next to in the evening), good food to eat or things to check out, etc.

Looking forward to seeing the beautiful coast of Oregon and southern Washington!
If the tides are right 4-6 hours us all you need.

If you'll be stopping anywhere near Port Orford, I'd suggest skipping the Humbug State Park campground and stay at Cape Blanco State Park.  Drier and more quiet.

I've stayed at both.  I find cape blanco to be just ever so slightly annoyingly far off of the highway.  There are also high winds that can rip through.  If you are looking for a destination spot instead of a place to crash for a few hours then cape blanco is a better choice.  It is drier and quieter.  That's because it isn't wind protected and its far from the highway.
