Hello, I have purchased a Lowrance Hook 7 for my kayak and I am thinking on locating the battery in the rear hatch ( its an Outback). My question is; there are lots of posts on the internet that show the placement of the battery secured to the sailing mast in the front hatch or in the hatch in front of the seat. Is there a reason why you don't see the placement in the rear? My kayak cart is to big to go in back and i would put the battery in the holder that sits on the opening and not have it on the bottom of the hull. I am very interested in hearing opinions on this as I am new to the whole thing, Thanks, John

My reasoning for putting my battery up front was that with my gear in the back I wanted to try to even out the weight a little bit. So I keep my battery and a few other things up in the front hatch of my hobie.

Where you fish may also influence where you want to place the battery.

If you are launching and landing in the surf it's nice to keep the weight twards the back and low.  If prone to flipping keeping everything inside the hull is a plus!

Attaching to the post for the mast doesn't interfere with the front hatch.  The battery is to the aft side of that post, and that post is an easy to reach and stable point to secure the battery box.  You can get to it while on the water if it's ever necessary to change a popped fuse.

I hadn't thought about mounting it in the rear to help with surf landings, but now that I read that, it seems unlikely that eight pounds in the back and down low is going to do much considering the amount of weight up high and forward, but hey!  If it works, great advice!

I mounted my battery box almost amidships, within reach through the center hatch, using 4" x 6" outdoor Velcro patches.  That Velcro holds the battery box when the Revo is upside down and being jostled.  DAMHIK that.

I place mine in the front hatch.  My battery is inside a watertight box attached to the sail mast.
This allows me access to the battery if needed.  You cannot access the battery in the rear hatch while OTW unless you head back in.

I have mine in the Outdoor Products waterproof box, placed down the center hatch of my Revo-16.  Given the added weight of my fishin' kit box behind me, plus the inevitable huge catch (at least 100 lbs every trip, ya right) in the aft well behind me, I suggest putting it in the fore hatch to help balance out the buoyancy.  Will your cart fit in the front hatch with the wheels off?

On my Revo 16 (and now AI) I put the battery inside the rear hatch. It's in a waterproof box and held securely in place with some gooped in place pool noodles. And, it is very secure, even when crashing in the surf (not that that would ever happen to me, haha...).
I don't like stuff that sucks.

I put mine in a roll top dry bag, clipped around a scupper hole.  Very simple setup, and seems more waterproof than any box with a hole in it.  The battery cable rolls up fine.
