The case was magnetized (!) in another one of the reviews.  ONe guy said if you use this compass you will die.  I learned long ago, the hard way, to read the reviews on amazon before buying something.

It kind of reminds me of the old Bell helmets advert "If you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet."

IMO, 22 degrees is unacceptable - if you are going to potentially trust your life to this piece of equipment, a higher quality, more accurate model is in order.

So yea, do your homework. I literally just typed compass into Amazon and copied the first link. I didn't mean to steer you wrong Spring, just making a point that you don't have to buy the most expensive marine compass. 22 degrees is about as useless as tits on a boar, it very well could be the compass you got out of a cracker jack box.

For a small pfd or ditch bag compass, i'm pretty happy with this one:

Doesn't have to be perfectly flat to read it, and it glows and is cheap.

Hey thanks for the heads up. So many options out there. And such a wide gap in price range

Bruddah.. thanks for theheads up on HX870 on sale.

Compass stories... I drove from Ann Arbor to Columbus OH after seeing a college buddy. Trying to make a plane back home.  A little south of Detroit the sky turned black and hail stones the size of golf balls came raining down. I wasn't quite sure of the roads, but I kept checking the little compass built into my watch band... Chicago 196 miles.. Chicago 193 miles.. that's weird... after half an hour I stuck my arm with the watch band out the window and the compass spun... it was pointing to the freakin' radio the whole time!! Barely made the flight....
