Hi,

I'm sorry for the stupid question but can sand dabs be caught outside the jetties at Half Moon Bay? I was thinking of trying to catch some while my crab pots soak.

Yes plenty of dabs in HMB. Straight out in 90 feet of water is a honey hole that has always produced good numbers for me.

I've caught them as shallow as 30 ft before but it's usually better out deeper. Try a larger sabiki tipped with squid and a weight top and bottom.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

There are some in the shallow tab grounds as I sometimes catch them in my crab traps. I have no idea how many are in there as I've never fished for them.

Hi Eliot,

What is the advantage of "weight top and bottom"?

Hi Eliot,

What is the advantage of "weight top and bottom"?

Sonny

It holds the whole sabiki string flat on the bottom.  If you have weight on the bottom only, the sabiki flies at the top will be out of range of the bottom hugging sand dabs.

Thanks Allen.  I'll give it a try next time.

Allens got it right. Sometimes it doesn't matter but other times when they ar Jt as aggressive it helps you load up more and average 1-2 more dabs per drop. Always nice to fill the cooler faster.
