So I ended up getting the 7yr/70K warranty (with $100 copay) for $1100.  Not sure if that is a good deal or not, but I figure with all the new gadgets on the car these days, I don't mind having a little peace of mind.  I have 90 days to cancel if I change my mind though.

Thanks for everyone's input on this!

What did that cover ? New car smell.  :smt002 Read over your coverage brochure. Sounds like a great deal !  :smt001

Similar to what i did when i bought my honda warranty.  found an out of state dealer whose primary business is selling extended warranties cheap.

Also, I read online that you can wait to buy the extended subaru warranty as long as you get it before  years/36k miles.  might be an option for you if you don't want to pony up the money quite yet and determine whether your car is a lemon or not.

Subaru extended warranties here are tricky because they are specific to CA. I think you did about as good as can be expected on the warranty pricing.

Remember; after 90 days, you still have the ability to cancel, it's just pro-rated after that.  Don't worry about what you paid for your warranty.  It's obviously something you felt had the value and that's what matters.

I'm sure glad I got mine!  Besides the complete motor change on my last one, I recently had issue with my 2015 Forester.  Got it stuck in the snow, then threw an engine code when I over heated the automatic transmission trying to rock it out.  I called the dealer at 4:30pm.  They close at 5pm and told me to come right down, they would stay open.  When I got there, I told them what I did.  They checked the code and it came back with the anomaly of the wheels turning, the speedometer not reading what it should.  Makes sense I guess.  They cleared the code, said if it came back, to return.  No paperwork, nothing.  They had me in the computer by my name when I called.  Didn't try to sell me a bunch of service I didn't need, etc.  Honest mechanic shop!!  That's at Shingle Springs Subaru BTW.

Just make sure that it is a Subaru Warranty and not an after market warranty company.

I was in a wreck a few months ago.  Stopped in the far left lane waiting to turn when a pick up truck going south jumped the median and pin balled 4 cars in front of me before hitting me head-on.  Van is totaled but the pick up driver is denying liability "due to an unforeseen medical condition."  Looks like I've got to take him to small claims to get the cost of my ER and Ambulance ride back.

So we may be in the market for another car and we're seriously considering a Subaru.  A friend who has had two Subarus is trying to talk us out of going that route.  His arguments against:

needs substantial maintenance at 60k miles
breaks are undersized for weight of vehicle
batteries die at 3 years.
after 5 years, costs start to add up.

He does like their crash rating.  A friend of his chopped one up and said the A and B pillars were many layers of steel.  The passenger compartment is solid.

The tone of some of these posts seems to support his sentiment.

60K service is substantial for almost any car, however it's not like the old days when a timing belt replacement was required.  I think the timing belts are generally replaced around 100K.  As far as the battery goes, I can't see where a battery in a Subaru would last any less than another car.  I just replaced mine after 6 years and it didn't show any signs of going bad.  I just think 5 or 6 years is about all you can expect from a battery.  I replaced the front breaks at 50k  but the rears are still going strong at 72K.  The stopping distances are very good for the Outback, compared to similar vehicles. Total cost of ownership for Subarus is very reasonable and reliability is great in my opinion.  My only gripe with mine is the driver's seat doesn't provide much support for my thighs and I tend to get very stiff if I drive for long periods.  I will likely buy another one when I need a new car.  I believe repeat ownership is among the highest of all car manufacturers and customer satisfaction and resale are also as good as it gets.

I did a panic stop with my 2000 outback on Hwy 1 a couple days ago.  Fiddling with the radio and traffic had slowed.  Brakes worked great ABS.  Only slewed a foot or so and didn't hit that car in front of me.

ps no MAJOR probs with the 2000.  2013 outback still feels new, but I don't get to drive that one.  No probs with the newer one.  Regular maintenance according to subaru directions.

newer fb/fa engines are all timing chains now. no need to change the timing belt anymore.

My 2015 has Eye Site.  It literally can not slam into the back of another car.  Heck, I have trouble pulling into the garage at a clip.  It beeps, hits my brakes, thinking I'm gonna hit the freezer in there.  Ha!

Get the Eye Site.  The speed control will pace you to the car in front regardless of speed.  I set mine for 75mph and it will keep me the right distance from the car in front from a dead stop up to 75.  Great for morning commute stop-n-go.

My salesman stood out in the parking lot.  I was supposed to accelerate towards him to demo the Eye Site.  He didn't wanna, but said he had to.  Ha!

I have a bad hip and lower back issue as well, I know what your talking about in the seat although on long drives if we don't stop to stretch I'll adjust the tilt angles if the seat every hour or so

It all depends on your priorities. I talked two of my family members into Subarus over the past year.  They are both getting older and less...ahem....reliable at the wheel when it comes to lane changes and sudden stops.  Simply put, the Subaru eyesight system is the gold standard among non-luxury cars for intelligent braking and crash avoidance.  AWD and good gas mileage was a plus too.  Reliability isn't in the Lexus/Toyota range (but it isn't bad either, top 5), but again it wasn't as high a priority as safety was.  Maintenance doesn't seem to be much different from any other car manufacturer.   So far, both are very happy with their cars (although both have less than 10k).
