To take advantage of a rare opportunity to get some of my money back from Uncle Sam I installed an energy efficient appliance.....in this case a new water heater. This sucker cost alot of money as it's one of the highest in efficiency models currently available at 93% AFUE. I would have done a new furnace too if I had the money even though mine is only 9 years old and is already 91% AFUE just to get one with a variable speed blower. Tech geak that I am. As it is I'm gonna get $600.00 back for the WH. Wish I could get the whole $1500.00 available but you've gotta spend/have reciepts for $5000.00 to get it all. Not pictured is my new chest freezer which sits below the tankless on the garage floor where the old 'code' 18" tall water heater riser was that I demo-ed.
Install was basic. Shoved new pvc flue pipe straight up the old metal flue. Tore off old metal cap & flashing and put an oatey jack down. Screwed unit into plywood that was behind sheetrock. Piped water down and in. Ran a drainline, hooked up gas, tpr, and plugged her into a surge protector. Done. This unit cost about $1565.00 I think but I padded the bill up to $2000.00 as I re-ran my furnace flue up the soffit above the old WH when it was pulled out of the way.
I've noticed a nice decrease in my gas bill since the install earlier this year, it's really sweet to never run out of hot water which used to happen almost every night before, and other than having to wait maybe a couple of seconds or so longer for the hot water to come there's been no downfalls. jim

I know this is an old thread, but just in case anybody is thinking about upgrading to an energy efficient appliance, the tax breaks run through the end of 2016. Not much time left...

Here's some info:

http://www.rheem.com/products/Federal_tax_credit

Recently, I bought a 94% efficient tankless Rheem water heater (propane). This particular unit mounts on the exterior of the house, and I've just about got it installed. With luck, it'll be ready to fire up in a day or two.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Knock on wood, I haven't had any problems with my tankless water heater.

In the meantime I uparaded my furnace blower motor to a variable speed model. I love how quiet it is on start up,  plus I was able to increase my a/c and decrease my furnace airflow for greater comfort and efficiency. It allowed me to fine tune my air delivery.
