Lexington - Sunday - 03.25.07

Got to the lake around noon....super late....my excuse is: there was this truck load full of puppies that over turned at HWY 17....there were puppies everywhere...and so I had to stop and rescue each puppy.....

Anyway, while I was getting ready to wheel my kayak down the ramp, a big white Ford Super Duper F-2000 monster truck nearly runs me over....and naturally, it was a rude surfer dude = John aka jmairey 

J - was determined to catch trout with his home-made down rigger device matched with his rear view mirror sunglasses and his special wetsuit with a frontal "peeping hole" 

I was there to get some paddle time and catch some LMB....

J decided to troll and I paddled back towards the sticks....and this is what I found:

...the water was waaaay down...even for this local...

I parked my yak next to a weed line right by the shore and started casting a spinner bait...

as I was moving up the weedline, I finally got a LMB to hit..."HULI KA "

On  6# line, the bass gave me a fight - it jumped clear out of the water twice shaking it's head...what a sight (photoed and released) Unfortunately, it was the only action I saw the entire day. I fished some other fishy spots but to no avail.

J joined me at the sticks and went on to another mission: bass

No joy for J....so we both paddled back to the main lake while the wind made it's presence. IT WAS BLOWING Finally got to ramp area - I looked for some more LMB and J went back to trolling for trout. I didn't see anymore LMB bass but I did get to see the Stanford Womens Crew team do their practice runs 

I ended the day with one bass and some really good paddling....and believe it or not, hanging out with "da rude surfer dude" was not that bad at all 

Joel that lake sure looks good for bass fishing, you sure get around. How do you like your new kayak any better then your Prowler.

Pat, the Tarpon 160 is a sweet ride. IMO: great for trolling  I still think the Prowler 15 is still a good all around kayak. It will be hard for me to decide what kayak to use on the weekends...

In fact, being the "troller" that you are, I'd like your opinion on the T-160. If we happen to fish together again, maybe you can test paddle it 

my tackle experiments were reasonably successful, now I just have to get up 7 hours earlier,   . Mooch is fast on the tarpon,  I had to paddle hard to catch him on the upwind return to the launch. I paddled it and I like it but I missed the snug feeling of the scupper pro, that boat fits me pretty well. In the tarpon I was sliding around quite a bit. nice boat tho, looks very slick!

Trout-wise, I did have one "downrigger" release on a gulp worm behind a dodger, but nobody was home when I went to reel it in,  .

Never having thrown a senko in my life I had some fun catching no bass, but eventually I need to catch a bass on purpose!

Later, I got snagged cutting too close to the island... leading to my most exciting moment of the afternoon. watching were two he-uge sculls full of 16 crew girls. "the <garbled adjective> kayaker has one!", I heard one exclaim,  as I tested for a fish but felt only unmoving snag. I was pretty sure the adjective in dispute was "cute", but mooch might have another theory...  my wife said it was probably "sexy",  . well "cute", "sexy", whatever, I won't quibble!  .

Joel I would love the opportunity to test paddle the T160 the only problem would be you would have to cruse my little 12 foot Manta Ray I don't think it would compar to yours  . But if you could stand it I would love the opportunity thanks  .

Looks like a fun exploratory mission.I have yet to fish Lex even though I've driven past it many times.I wonder how a finesse worm dropshot or weightless senko would work in that weedbed....Too bad the water is so low, those trees and exposed stumps would make perfect bass cover.

aaron, free launch. they stocked it last week. some folks have had double digit bass days there.

you might try showing up before noon, or if you launch after noon, staying as last as you can tho!

I'm sure it would work...I only brought one rod with me....and was too lazy to re-tie  I actually caught the winning LMB at Lex on the very first Money Between Friends derby - caught it on a drop shot rig with a purple robo worm  I noticed most of the float tubers do well on this lake - with really slow presentations.

That same day, there were two bass boats on the lake - before they left, both boat hads 1 fish each, about 2 to 3 pounds.

Nice day out....with a fish aint so bad.You could have been sitting around the house watchin da grass grow,like most do on the weekends.
