Hey all, First time poster here. I mainly go for lings and rockfish off ocean cove. Pretty addictive. Also usually successful with the exception of the simply fishing tournament last month where I got skunked. My steed is a big fat 13.5 foot yellow tandem Perception tribe kayak, the Glen Elly. Super stable in choppy surf.

My GF and her family are headed to Stinson this next weekend. So my question: Can I bring my ocean cove equipment--chrome jigs, shrimp flies, and bait rigs there with some squid--and have a decent chance? What species are in play down there right now? Any advice appreciated.

Hey Chris,

There is definitely some good rockfishing available near Stinson Beach. Stinson is a south-facing beach, but it's pretty exposed and the shorebreak can be nasty. If the conditions allow, you can launch from Stinson and paddle south/east to the rocks where the beach ends. Be careful, the NW winds can pick up quickly and make for a tough paddle back.

If the shore break at Stinson is too nasty, take a short drive to the town of Bolinas and check out the end of Brighton Ave. That's where I usually launch. There are some rocky pinacles and reefs just offshore (south) of the launch.

The usual rockfish/lingcod techniques like jigs, swimbaits, shrimp flies, dead/live bait will all work here, too.

Glenn, I would advise to bring a company with you if you go out on a yak, especially now that it's October.  Also, if you read AlexB's other posts, he caught a nice WSB there!

Okay, wind and waves don't look too bad today and tomorrow morning. My buddy and I are thinking of taking our tandem off Brighton ave in Bolinas there Saturday morning and heading a bit south to look for that structure. We were also considering Muir beach, do you think this would be better? We'll probably just be jigging.

Heeeeeeeey Chris! You finally made it to the forum. If there is any chance I can make it out with you guys, I will but I suspect I'll be busy getting ready for the party.

I'm guessing you can't see it yet since you're not at 10 posts yet, but AlexB was suggesting in another thread that the conditions are NO GO for Brighton tomorrow. He didn't mention it but he's a regular in those parts (like almost every weekend), so I would take his advice and skip going out tomorrow. Maybe shore fish?

Chris,
Here is the post from the other thread.  I don't suggest launching from Muir.  Wind will pick up and push you northward around noon time.

CANCELLED due to weather... (Better day for surfing...)

Now that NOAA is filling in some details on their forecast for Saturday, it's clearly a NO GO. There's a big, powerful, long-period WNW (308*) swell building throughout the day on Saturday. Usually N/NW/WNW and even W swells aren't a big deal at Bolinas, since Duxbury Reef tends to block the majority of their energy. But... swells with heights of 6 feet+ and periods over 15 seconds pack a LOT of energy. A WNW swell of 6+ (and building) at 17 seconds from 308 degrees will actually wrap around Duxbury Reef and hit Bolinas from the south.

To make matters worse, there's a high high tide of 4.5 ft peaking around noon, which means the waves WILL be crashing on the pavement at Brighton Ave.

This is a great opportunity to learn about how a big swell is affected by different shoreline configurations and bathymetry. Go to www.weather.gov and click in on the map until your forecast is focused on a small point, then move up and down the coastline and observe how the forecast changes. For example, if you focus on a point just north of Point Reyes, you see a swell forecast of about 8 ft@17s from the WNW. If you click inside of Drakes Bay, that same swell will be forecasted as something like 4 ft@17s from the S. The same phenomenon happens in Bolinas Bay.

See you guys out there next year! Trout fishing on Saturday?

My read is different, I think it's very do-able as long as you launch before 7am and land after 2pm.  9am-12pm is definitely a better window to surf.  I am talking inside Bolinas, about 1/2 to 3/4 out between launch and buoy.

However, this is the one place that I won't go out alone in October, so I am out as well.  Plus, it's always a good idea to measure your risk and take the side of caution in case the weather turns for the worse.

'gonna gun for HMB instead, but still lobbying the wife  :-)

Alright, thanks guys. And good to see you in digital space Brian! Really appreciate the wisdom yakyakyak and posting Alex's thoughts below. Probably have saved me from a touch situation. Just goes to show that when I look at a swell forecast it's very different than what an experienced person sees.
