I'm looking for a kayak that I can take my wife out into ocean with me and still have room for gear and be plenty stable. I would also like to be able to paddle it solo when she doesn't want to come along. I found one of the for $450 ok craigslist. It seems like a deal for such a big kayak but I am worried it may be to big and maybe to much to handle on my own when she's not with me. Any thoughts as to if this would work for just me when I don't have anybody else along? Thanks.

I haven't looked at the kayak, but I think you are right to worry. Trying to get one kayak to do two different things well, might be difficult. Plus there is a benefit to letting each person control their own kayak.

I ended up deciding against it. It is just to big for me to deal with solo. I will get a bout for the entire family to go in. I will yak on my own but I still want something a bit bigger than my tarpon 100.

Can't say that's a bad idea. My Tarpon 120 is barely big enough for the ocean. I've ordered a Thresher 140 and it is really nice for the ocean. There are lots of kayaks in that range that will work.

After a while you would be miserable paddling that beast.
Good decision.

If unloading it solo didn't make you hate it, by the time you paddled (slaved) back in and were laboring to load it alone, you'd have been tempted to just leave it on the ground and drive away....

The Ocean Kayak Malibu II XL can be found second hand at many kayak shops. Multiple seating configurations. Designed before fishing specific kayaks became popular, so you have fewer mounting options - but it's a good family boat

Jackson Big Tuna is my family boat it paddles pretty damn good for an aircraft carrier and my youngest son and I have been on it together at a little over 400 pounds for us both. Handles great solo with a milk crate behind the solo seat as long as you don't have an extensive wrap sheet. I car topped it till I got a trailer but I'm a 17 yr ex-garbage man. Also surfs really good.

Good decision.

On the other hand (or maybe the same hand...) it could have made for an epic yard sale.
