Hey Guys!

I'll be staying at Donner Lake over the Labor Day weekend and wanted to see if anyone was down to meet up? I'm new to Kayak fishing and figured the lake would be a perfect starting point vs heading out to the salt right away!

I have a Cobra Tandem, have all my FF bits and parts uninstalled so will be frantically rushing to rig her up.

I've only shore fished for rainbows so don't have any rigging for Macks or Lake trout. Open to just paddle with a fellow kayaker to learn the ropes!

Best,
Kevin

Hey everyone,

A bit late but hope you all had a great Labor Day!

Hate to report but no luck at Donner Lake  :smt011 However, was able to take the freshly rigged kayak out 3 days in a row so I would count that as a win. I think going through the motions of preparing for a trip helped a lot since it was only over that prior weekend that I had spent all of Sat installing the FF, mounting stuff and what not. It was great just to get out and see the lake at its calmest moments.

I tried trolling for Kokanee and did a bunch of research online. Went to Ace mountain hardware in Truckee to pick up all the rigs and flashers. I tried going for pink colored spinners since I google imaged everything and anything Donner lake and that seemed to be the color of choice. Also read that tipped corn helped the cause so had a couple of kernels packed in from our BBQ dinner. In all, I had worms, salmon eggs, corn, power bait. you name it. Threw everything I could at them and not a single bite!

Fortunate thing is that I learned how to use the FF in water. It took me a while to get all the settings correct and again, going through the motions helped tremendously and by the second day, I could see my kayak go over large schools of fish at various depths. Bought all the rigs, all the bait, all the time and effort to research, but couldn't buy a bite.

One of the 3 mornings I decided to just walk around the lake casting my trusty kastmaster. Stuck by the public piers at the South side of the lake and got 3 bites on a silver kastmaster. Set the hook too eagerly though. Owell.

Donner Lake, I'll be back next time with fresh ideas!

Best,
Kevin
