I am down here for a couple weeks.  Anyone else in SD?  Not doing La Jolla as broke shoulder in March, and still getting arm fully working, so do not want to have to get in kayak in ocean swells.

See if the Mission Belle is doing day trips to the Coronados. There are some great yellowtail out there. Mission Bay has some great spotted bass. Ping me on IM if you want to know more about that place. I go there every year with my son.

I believe most 3/4 day boats are out targeting yellowfin tuna.

If you're looking for a 3/4 day trip, I would highly recommend Liberty Sportfishing out of fisherman's landing. Recently renovated boat with plenty of space. Mission Belle is also an option. Mission Belle used to put the fish in gunny sacks and occasionally hose the fish off to keep them "cold" but I heard they recently got a salt water tank below deck.

For longer trips, I would definitely recommend the Pacific Queen or Top Gun 80.

I stand corrected. In June/July, it is normally yellowtail, but looks like the yft bit is happening! Great news!

That is correct. They just did a big overhaul on that boat and the captain and crew are good. I have heard great things on Liberty.  The expert on this forum is Hojo. Ask that man! He knows his offshore stuff!  :smt003

Steve and I took a full day buddy cruise out of Mission Bay.  I'd hire that skipper again if I were down there.  While we did not plug the holds, he sure put the work in.

I have fished MB on my kayak several times. Shad patterned crank baits like rapala DT 6 can work well, either trolled or cast and retrieve along eel grass beds. Plastic grubs and swimbaits also work well. I have mostly fished the west side of the bay, and have some favorite spots in San Juan cove and over near Sea World. Sometimes I get live bait from the bait barge in Quivira basin and use it Mariner's basin, or the channel between the two and to the north. Watch out for sea lions which can be aggressive if you are using live bait, and don't hang any fish on a stringer. The current in that channel can be very strong so keep that in mind.
Mission bay can be fun, relaxing, and productive, but I prefer San Diego bay, and usually use live bait there. You can launch from a sandy beach north of the Shelter Island ramp and buy bait from the barge or catch it off the pier with sabiki. However, the big bay has a much more exposed feel to it than mission bay and you have to pay close attention at all times to boat and ship traffic, wakes, etc. there are also closed security areas (navy).
Good luck and have fun.
Matt
