I have a Scotty rod holder. My Calstar rod won't even fit in the holder, because the butt end is too large for it. Is there a larger size holder that will fit the Calstar? I also have two ram mounts up front that could take rod holders if there isn't a larger Scotty.

Gano what yak do you paddle?  I had the below holder before i got my yak, but it works out on the SPTW.

http://www.boatersworld.com/product/476975016.htm

There are few mounting options for it, though.  It's a big holder and the rod butt kinda keeps my right foot in the footwell, until I take the rod out.  It fits my Calstar 870 w/Hypalon grip easily.

Here's how I set it up.  Sorry the fish head is in the way.

Which Scotty do you have and which Calstar.  I got a couple Calstar rods with larger butts and they fit just fine in the larger Scotty holder.  I'm sure they won't fit in the smaller ones.

You might have the "baitcaster" model Scotty.  Biger calstar butts won't fit.  I had the same problem....my 196 fit, but none of the others, esp the deckhand models with hugge rubber butt ends.

Scotty makes a bigger size that of course fists the same base.  All myu calstars fit.  also fit the ram tube mount.

Scotty Rodmaster II is my hands-down favorite.  You can remove the gimbal pin to result in an open-bottomed tube, and the notch in the underside of the top of the rod holder fits a trigger, making a baitcaster stay upright more easily.  It also mates up well with the spindle of a spinning reel for a nice fit.

Not sure which model Scotty it is. It came with the Tarpon 160i, with the base already mounted. I'll look into getting a larger size, now that I know they are available.

Any luck with halibut today?

OK, I went to their web site. You're right, it's the baitcaster model:

I see the Rodmaster models that KZ mentioned. Is that the kind you are using for the bigger Calstars?

You should be able to use the Rodmaster II with any rod in your arsenal.  I've yet to see a rod with a grip that won't fit in that rodholder.

Is there any way to tilt it to the left instead of the right?

I'm not sure I understand your question.

The scotty can be oriented in any position, 360 degrees around and zero to almost 90 degrees vertically.

I'll check mine tomorrow. In the past, I couldn't move it past the vertical.

I figured out what I was doing wrong. After the tab slips thru the notch, you can rotate the rod holder before you seat it. I picked up a larger Scotty and it works fine.

I looked at the holder with the extended wire brace, but I was concerned that it would create more leverage and possibly cause the kayak to flip if a really big fish strikes.
