Was workin great for a few months and now it's freezing up at least a couple times every outing. Power disconnect is the only option. No response from any buttons.

Before launching did a hard reset and checked cables
Factory default fresh water settings with ping on slow
loaded only the waypoints I needed
Turned on sonar log
Worked perfectly, for about 2 minutes
crapped out before I cleared the Capitola warf

Battery disconnect for a few seconds worked but I had to reset 4 more times in 6 hours

3 things of note, but I can't be sure whether the trouble started before or after

1 plugged in the Insight Nautical HD chart with all the beautiful detailed maps and used it for 1 trip. First load and refresh was slow but usable. Then saw that the Hook only supports the Pro chart (not HD). Pulled the card and haven't used it again.

2 started logging sonar for upload to Insight. The app is a POS but shows depth and bottom composition for the whole route. I figure eventually I'll cover enough water to have a really detailed set of maps.

3 ran the unit to see how long the battery would last and the xducer was still connected. Have since read that's a no-no. Wondering if I eff'd the Xducer.

I'll call support but any thoughts or advice?

Hard Reset then upload newest version of software (free).  Call support if problem persists while under warranty.  The insight produces very useful maps if recorded correctly.

This happened to me with my Chirp 5. Battery was going, switched it out with new juice and she was rocking once again. Attached is a quick reset ref guide.

Great point Mike.  The battery condition makes a world of difference.  Older batteries, and not to imply this is your issue, may exhibit an acceptable voltage but the deliverable amperage is below the draw rate and units can freeze or simply power off.  I've had my hands on quite a number of "bad" units only to find they power & operate just fine on a reliable DC power source.

Great suggestion. Lowrance support asked for the unit so they can look at it, but I'll try a new battery first.

Sadly not the battery. That would have been too simple :smt012

It's on the way to Lowrance for repair so will see what they find.

Garmin replaced the unit under warranty so who knows what the issue was. Bummed that it happened but give Garmin props for customer service.

Hopefully I can get back on top of my home projects and make it out next weekend. Fishing is waaaay more fun than replacing rotted window frames :smt012
